Thread: Introducing myself

Sawadee Krab, I'm really glad to find this forum with so many interesting discusions... everything from language to gardening!

I'm a single American in his mid-50s planning a long visit to Thailand (possibly up to 1 year) beginning later this year... from what I have read so far I think that Chiang Mai might be a good fit for me for an extended stay although I do plan to visit many places. Among other things, I'm a musician and was wondering if there is any kind of live music scene at all in Chiang Mai?

This trip is sort of a get-acquainted visit for the idea of possibly relocating more or less permanently. People who are living in Thailand who are not totally retired, I'm curious what you do with yourselves to make ends meet? Another question I have is that I have read some things that suggest the Thais are less than excited about having farangs moving to their country... true? Do you run into some resentment from the locals?

Any way hope to make some new friends here and hopefully have a lot of questions answered...

There are quite a few bars with bands, especially at weekends, though I don't know much about it.

Local hostility.. Chiang Mai isn't too bad.

Somebody posted a list of sites on another Thailand forum, I can't recall which one as I've cruised through a bunch of them.

As for Thais not liking foreingers, bit like everywhere really - depends on the Thai, some do, some don't.

friend of mine came here as a guitar addict and could finally work as a professional getting every day a music job...

He built up groups, bands ,jazz was his thing, but played all kind of request songs also but somehow hated Hotel california at some time, still do not know why...

He catched contracts for a few month in bars of hotels, 5 stars...

He was really living well in bkk with a huge 240 square meter condo with 2 other friends, when he was going home after play, and after a few drinks, bkk was very quiet and then worked in the appartment, for local music groups or singers to record them, he installed a nice recording and mixing studio, another good income...

He was a happy guy, living his dream life, but his nose end went whiter with some powder and suddenly died of a bike acccident on Kho Samui, sad end...

Lots of potential for good contracts for music live bands over here, but keep away from drugs...
