    Hello from Gainesville, FL

    Hello all,

My lovely wife (Tai), my extremely cool children (Nicholoas, age 4 and Chomwara/Holly, age 2) and myself are excited to be coming to stay in Korat for the entire month of February '12. Tai's monther and sister live there and we'll be staying with them. As I understand it (very little, btw), they live in a new development in the south west section of Korat (if you do a google earth map, look for a bunny rabbit looking dirt track... I think we'll be near that).

I just wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves and say thank you for everyone who contributes to this forum. It truly is an excellent source of local information.

    Best regards and Go Gators!

Welcome to Mike, Tai, Nicholoas (strange way to spell his name or was it intended) and Holly.

I hope you enjoy your holiday and continue to contribute your thoughts here.

A friend of ours has some property in Hawthorne. I'm even familiar with a past mayor of Hawthorne... John something... he plays a virtual trombone with his towel during gator basketball games.

We'll be leaving out to the local airport in less than two hours.. excited. Check ya when we get situated in Korat.

    Thanks for the welcoming!

We call and spell my wife's name "Tai" because her uncle nicknamed her "katai", suggesting her rabbit-like behavior as a 3 year old child. Coincidently, it has nothing to do with her nationality (which, of course, is Thai).

We're excited about our epic journey today... Be in our Korat beds in about 32 hours, I'd estimate.

    THanks for saying "helllo"!

Have fun man. Khorat is OK. There is a zoo and stuff to the south of the city, it'll be good for a day out for the kids.

Hi. Turns out we're staying at a home nowhere near that bunny shaped track. We're staying in NE Korat area quite near the intersection of Rt 205 and Rt 2. I think the coordinates are:

    <longitude>102.1255527956139</longitude>
    <latitude>15.04535630115846</latitude>

We had a nice side trip to Koa Yai mountain area, yesterday. Glad to be here.

Relocating to Thailand from the USA

    Hi,

We're now in Korat visiting Tai's mother, sister, uncles, cousins, nephews and old friends. She thinks it would be a good thing to sell everything we have in the USA and move our whole family to Thailand. I keep reading warnings against doing that thing, especially due to financial issues and children's education.

Since you said you last lived in Hawthorne, FL, I just wanted to ask you how the move has been for you. Has it been a good thing? Has it been financially difficult? Do you have children?

    Please let us know.

    Thanks!

Don’t sell. Use the excuse that property values are still low in Florida right now and in a couple of years things should look better (property values might go up). If you do decide to sell.

This you give you a legitimate excuse To Think about making a permanent move to Thailand.

    Heed the warnings!

Think twice about Korat, and surrounding areas, it's prone to annual flooding.

Only parts of Korat flood. It has never flooded in Moo 6, Baan Nong Sa Mong but it does flood in some areas. Anywhere in Thailand is a flood risk. Check before buying land or building. The last flood in Korat was the governments fault. They opened the dam and did not advise everyone concerned. St. Marys Hospital first floor and parking areas flooded. Just check first and ask many questions - not from the person selling the land. My wife does real estate work in the area if you start looking. John

    Hi Mike,

Are you in Home Garden Sub-division?

My wife's Cell Phone Number is 085-3041701. Her name is Janyaporn, but, just call her Nui. You or your wife can call my wife and we can go from there. I have many American friends in Korat who can give you good advice. Especially on schooling.

My children are all grown. I am retired and lazy. No work. No kids. No bills. No responsibility. etc, etc and I love it.

Regrets - none. Would I do it again - in a heart beat. I have lived in SEA since June 1996 when I flew out from LA.

We live in Moo 6 Baan Nong Sa Mong, Nong Bua Sala. We live just before Don Kwian. When you go to immigration you pass our village.

    Give us a call.

    John

    p. s. listen to your wife
