Seizure of Bikes In Chiang Mai

Normally this things are bullshit rumors, doesn't look like it this time.

I consider this guy relaible he is the owner of GTriders and lives in Chaing Mai. Not prone to panicking so up to you guys to decide. Note: it also mention to tea money, so my guess it's true.

"Well it's on in Chiang Mai if you haven't heard already.
The police are doing the rounds & seizing unplated bikes.
Produce your invoices & you will / won't get your bike back??

One rental shop has been asked to produce the green rego books for their licenced bikes 250cc+ to be checked.

An unconfirmed rumour pay 8,000 baht & you get your bike back.

Supposedly a stack of bikes have been seized, but I can't see where they are locked up (yet).

So if you ride an unplated bike, then DON'T - for the time being, or you will lose it.

My guess is Chiang Rai will be next, if not already.

You all take care now, plus expect these crack downs to become more frequent & tougher.

What happens when the big companies start bringing in their own big bikes.

THey want the 'dodgy' bikes out of the system to get their bikes sold.

Be interesting to see if Kawasaki etc can get you a plate and book for your bike now that they are able to sell them here again fresh from the factory.

No idea, but possibly worth looking into

Should ask at a local friendly garage if they can arrange books for other bikes.

    Might well be able to.

Not a problem if all paperwork are in order. Bikes bought from official dealers are also no problem.
Not really a fuss unless you don't have a green book.

I don't see the problem, really. Doesn't it only affect unregistered bikes? If so then it's a fair cop.

Well, if affected all unregistered bikes, then fair enough, but it seems they're only targeting the small number of large bikes rather than the large number of unregistered mopeds.

I guess the wealthy Thais will be let off for a fine or a word from Daddy, leaving the foreigners the ones who suffer yet again.

strange reaction to the police actually doing their job and getting illegal bikes off the road!

the fact that they allow you to pay so you don't have to go to court may be a good thing, as the court would confiscate the bike AND fine you

incidentally, bikes with no proper papers are often stolen bikes that have been resold

so catching them would, hopefully, lead to people thinking twice about buying bikes without papers, then it would become less worthwhile stealing them
    I have reported your post

It was closed as there is already an identical thread on another subforum.

What the cops should do is confiscate, register and sell on.

It'd cost them more to register my bike than they could get from selling it.

    Two things spring to mind.
    1. Manufacturers are pressing police to remove big bikes to increase new sales.
    2. Police orphans fund is feeling the credit crunch.

Posting on the forum, this i the problem guys up until recently you could not get a new big bike in Thailand. That only been in the last fwe years. o you want plate instead of 1K baht you paid 70K baht.

Your right about some bikes being stolen but not all a miost are brough over in parts adn put back together. That way a 2% tax for importing tax,. You get import papers another 70K for a book. What has changed is that you can now get certian bikes with book from dealers.

Bikes with no books for both Thais and Farrangs have beem common here for years.

The only realistic option buy the grey book for 70K, ot take your chances which used to invole a 200 Baht fine, that appears to be changing.

The othe was to pay a huge import fee, and walk through months of bullshit and tea money to get a book.

    Plenty of official dealers now.
Kawasaki, Yamaha, BMW, Triumph, Harley Davidson and hopefully more to come in the future.

Guess the pressure is on to clear up the illegal bikes that have not been fully registered and paid up on the tax front.

Just wish they abolish the "Stay in the left lane ruling".
