The GTHO Phase III was designed and built for 1 reason only.
That was to win the Bathurst 500.
Holden had dropped pushing the the similar sized and powered Monaro in favour of the smaller Torano GTR XU-1.
The XU-1 was more agile, cheaper and more economical, but the GTHO Falcons went all out for power that they had on the Bathurst straights.
Allan Moffat completed the 500 miles first followed by other GTHOs in second and third place and filling six of the top seven places.
