    Warning about buying a car

Just a word of warning... DO NOT BUY A CAR THAT IS "OWNED" BY A FINANCE COMPANY - unless you are in no hurry to get ownership.

I recently bought a car from a Thai woman. She had finance on the car, so I went with her to the large and reputable finance office to pay off her debt and then (I thought) get the Blue Book to enable me to transfer ownership to my name.
However, the finance company revealed - only after they had my money - that they don't have the Blue Book, it is somewhere in Bangkok (?) and they will get it for me in "2 or 3 days". It is now a week, and the finance company still doesn't know when the Blue Book will get here. In the meantime, the car has no current tax (another thing to check when buying), so I cannot renew the tax, and so have to rent a car if I want to drive and avoid potential legal calamities. So the car is costing me much more than the price I paid, aside from wasted time. Caveat Emptor, especially here in LoS.

Codesh, you're probably talking about a finance company such as Tisco, and they do not own the book; they're just a finance company..., it is held by the Thai vehicle office in Mo Chit until the final payment is made then the book is sent out to the owner who has been getting the documents (such as annual tax and car insurance) put in their name over the term of the finance. Of course, if ownership has now changed then the documents will need changing and some paperwork will need to be done - that's the same the world over, and, BTW, that Bangkok vehicle office is excellent; the people there are polite and efficient and it's generally a breeze to work with compared to both other Thai departments and other country's vehicle departments.

Sorry, OP, but you have nothing to complain about at all other than your lack of understanding of the processes (which would be very similar whichever country you are from). I'm all for Thai bashing, love it, my favourite past-time, but in this case the Thais are correct...

^Yep, good advice from Betty on this subject. If people feel compelled to just offer pathetic juvenile little rejoinders, probably best just limping back to thaivisa with your crap.

Given the lack of trust in thailand when it comes to any kind of property deal, i am somewhat surprised by the process boo describes. this is the case, why are the finance company telling him they will have the documents shortly.... when the documents will be posted to the original owner... not the finance company.

As far as transactions going bad in thailand, seems to me the OP has got off incredibly lightly compared to many others

Hope it works out OK, I had a pain in the ass with Thanachart after paying off the car I bought new. The Pattaya branch said the book was in Bangkok and Bangkok said Pattaya. Took several weeks and several phone calls by a Thai teacher co-worker to find it.

I think the process is that the person on the finance forms has to go to the office in Mo Chit to sort out the paperwork; i.e. the previous 'owner' when there's a chnage of name/owner. If they are not able to then there are various other forms to fill out; I don't know all of these, and I wouldn't be surprised if the OP will be asked to head to Mo Chit himself. Or, maybe the finance company can get part of the way there, send some forms to the OP who will then need to head to Mochit.

I've only ever dealt with change of name, address and end of finance terms at that office (when I put the car in my wife's name for ease, as I'm out of the country - she had to go to the office). If I'd kept the car in my name at the end of the finance terms then they'd have sent it to me. I also went there once to get new license plates - excellent and quick service. I've found this office and the work permit place to be the best (although the work permit place is very busy, the staff are very helpful and know their job).

This is kind of harsh, but I think great advice. I'm learning what a jungle it is here.

^^The mochit is an is impressive, fast, efficient and well thought out.... though like all civil servants they like their rules and paperwork. Does demonstrate that they are just as capable as the rest of the world at getting stuff done.... when then feel like it.

^It can be and anything to do with land or property makes these car problems look like nothing. Would be nice to know if he did get his book in the end

    Absolutely correct.

We should all bow down on our knees and thank this country for even selling us a car.

And never ever feel at ease hearing the words 'No Problem/Mai Mii Phen Haa'.

    They usually proceed words from yourself such as ;

'I knew it, I just fukin; knew it!'
'I told you it wouldn't fit!'
'I didn't ask you to do it like that!'
'Are trying to get me killed?'
'STOP!! That's enough! I'll do it myself!'
'See, what did I tell ya!'
'My ol' man was right, if you want something done right, do it yourself'
    etc., etc.,......

Correct, there is more to it than just paying off the finance. I sold my Forza which I paid cash for and there was a mass of what seem uneccessary paper work to hand it legally over to the buyer.

I sold my Ranger whilst it was still financed with Tisco.

Myself and new owner went to Tisco Pattaya.
Payout figure was shown and he gave me the cash and I made the final payment.

Tisco advises it will take a week or 2 to have the book updated with my name in it and have the option to have the book sent to me or collect from Tisco office, chose collect from Tisco office as Thai post can be a bit flaky.

New owner then has to take book to LTD to change name in book (from mine to his), obviously needs the correct documentation (power of attorney form/my passport/my work permit etc etc)

New owner never did collect book from me.... somewhere in Pattaya there is a V8 Ranger that technically Iam am the legal owner of !!
