    Air bag recall in Asean

I've been following the big safety recall in the US - now 50 million cars! The worrying thing was the number of Japanese cars with faulty air bags - about 16 million. I haven't been able to find anything about it locally until today.

According to Asean Auto Manufacturers Act on Deadly Airbags As Regulators Stay Mute Honda has replaced 27,000 "so far", Toyota 112,000 and BMW 2,000.

Nissan and Mazda refused o answer questions and there's no mention of

Isuzu, Mitshubishi, Subaru, Ford, GM, and Chrysler.

Seems the only way they are contacting people is through dealership and service records. So if you don't get your car serviced at a dealer or didn't buy it from a dealer they can't contact you.

The story says at least three people have been killed by these and the link to the New York Times says it's particularly dangerous for owners in hot and humid climates.

Has anyone had their airbags replaced here?

Why isn't there some sort of warning from the Thai government? And why nothing written in the Bangkok Post or Nation about this?

Can't post a link sorry, but if you Google the story title you should find it.

Should I head to my local dealer even though I didn't buy the car from him?

Massive Takata Airbag Recall: Everything You Need to Know, Including Full List of Affected Vehicles

November 7, 2014 at 5:29 pm by Clifford Atiyeh

The automotive world and beyond is buzzing about the massive airbag recall covering many millions of vehicles in the U.S. from nearly two dozen brands. Here’s what you need to know about the problem; which vehicles may have the defective, shrapnel-shooting inflator parts from Japanese supplier Takata; and what to do if your vehicle is one of them.
    * SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR FULL LIST OF AFFECTED VEHICLES *
The issue involves defective inflator and propellent devices that may deploy improperly in the event of a crash, shooting metal fragments into vehicle occupants. More than 7 million vehicles are potentially affected in the United States.
Initially, only six makes were involved when Takata announced the fault in April 2013, but a Toyota recall in June this year—along with new admissions from Takata that it had little clue as to which cars used its defective inflators, or even what the root cause was—prompted more automakers to issue identical recalls. In July, NHTSA forced additional regional recalls in high-humidity areas including Florida, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to gather removed parts and send them to Takata for review.
Another major recall issued on October 20 expanded the affected vehicles across several brands. For its part, Toyota said it would begin to replace defective passenger-side inflators starting October 25; if parts are unavailable, however, it has advised its dealers to disable the airbags and affix “Do Not Sit Here” messages to the dashboard.

While Toyota says there have been no related injuries or deaths involving its vehicles, a New York Times report in September found a total of at least 139 reported injuries across all automakers. In particular, there have been at least two deaths and 30 injuries in Honda vehicles. According to the Times, Honda and Takata allegedly have known about the faulty inflators since 2004 but failed to notify NHTSA in previous recall filings (which began in 2008) that the affected airbags had actually ruptured or were linked to injuries and deaths.
Takata first said that propellant chemicals were mishandled and improperly stored during assembly, which supposedly caused the metal airbag inflators to burst open due to excessive pressure inside. In July, the company blamed humid weather and spurred additional recalls.
According to documents reviewed by Reuters, Takata says that rust, bad welds, and even chewing gum dropped into at least one inflator are also at fault. The same documents show that in 2002, Takata’s plant in Mexico allowed a defect rate that was “six to eight times above” acceptable limits, or roughly 60 to 80 defective parts for every 1 million airbag inflators shipped. The company’s study has yet to reach a final conclusion and report the findings to NHTSA.
UPDATE 11/7, 9:44 a.m.: The New York Times has published a report suggesting that Takata knew about the airbag issues in 2004, conducting secret tests off work hours to verify the problem. The results confirmed major issues with the inflators, and engineers quickly began researching a solution. But instead of notifying federal safety regulators and moving forward with fixes, Takata executives ordered its engineers to destroy the data and dispose of the physical evidence. This occurred a full four years before Takata publicly acknowledged the problem.
UPDATE 11/7, 5:29 p.m.: Two U.S. Senators have now called for the Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation on this matter. Takata has stated that “the allegations contained in the [New York Times] article are fundamentally inaccurate.” The company went on to state that it “takes very seriously the accusations made in this article and we are cooperating and participating fully with the government investigation now underway.”

Airbag Recall Update: Takata Allegedly Knew 10 Years Ago of Deadly Airbag Defect, Lieff Cabraser Announces

    11/07/2014 | 06:50pm US/Eastern
Tests by former workers at airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation showed a dangerous flaw in the airbags, the New York Times reported yesterday. The secret tests were performed after normal work hours and on weekends and holidays during the summer of 2004 at Takata’s American headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Instead of alerting federal safety regulators to the possible danger, Takata executives, the New York Times reported, discounted the results and ordered the lab technicians to delete the testing data from their computers.
Commenting on the report, auto defect attorney Todd Walburg of the national plaintiffs’ law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP stated, “It’s shocking that Takata allegedly conducted secret tests and then failed to protect their customers from a known harm. Unfortunately, we are seeing a growing trend of massive automotive company cover-ups that need to be handled through simultaneous criminal prosecution and civil litigation.”
Eleven carmakers, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler and BMW, have recalled more than 11 million vehicles sold in the U.S. to fix the defect in the Takata airbags. Some have ruptured, sending metal fragments into the car. At least four deaths and more than 30 injuries have been linked to the problem. A full list of the cars sold in the U.S. with faulty Takata airbags can be found at http://www.lieffcabraser.com/Personal-Injury/Car-Accidents/Takata-Airbag-Recall.shtml

Honda expands Takata airbag recall following NHTSA scrutiny

    1

The third-largest Japanese automaker is Takata’s largest client, and has been deeply involved in the recalls of cars equipped with airbags produced by the auto safety parts supplier since 2008.

It appears that Honda has finally reacted to the airbag debacle – it’s the largest contributor to the recent airbag recalls that have reached almost 8 million vehicles in the US alone (from all automakers), it has been involved in lawsuits that target Takata and all the deaths reported so far (four cases) involved its models. Also, the company is now under investigation by the US safety regulator after it acknowledged it failed to tally all the reports involving accidents linked to Takata airbags. Honda said it asked a third-party audit on its procedures and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the company to provide documents and answers under oath about the historic ties with Takata and the airbag procedures.
Faced with the growing prospect of a wide safety investigation, Honda decided to jump the gun and added to its recall tally an undisclosed number of cars from model years 2001-2006. They are all sold or registered in regions with high humidity – believed to be a contributing factor to the rapid failure of airbag inflators produced by Takata. The defective part tends to explode with too much force and send metal and plastic debris flying inside the cabin at high velocity.

The National Highway Site visitors Security Administration has expanded its recall of faulty Japanese airbags to extra than 6 millions automobiles. The Takata airbag recall applies to owners of specific Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford and Basic Motors vehicles, according to a statement from the federal government.
"Over 6 million vehicles are involved in these recalls, which have occurred as far back as 18 months ago and as not too long ago as Monday," it added. The prior airbag recall issued Monday covered four.74 million automobiles. Recall notices sent to car owners commonly contain a description of what is wrong with the vehicle and the achievable threat posed by the issue, how the manufacturer plans to fix the trouble, when the repair will be available and what to do next.
The recall includes airbags that could malfunction if exposed to regularly high humidity, causing metal fragments to fly out when the bags are deployed in a crash, according to reports. "Responding to these recalls, whether or not old or new, is necessary to personal security, and it will assistance aid our ongoing investigation into Takata airbags and what appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity and temperatures," NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman stated.
In June, Honda Motor, Nissan Motor and Mazda recalled over two million cars to repair potentially faulty airbags, whilst Toyota ordered the recall of nearly 650,000 autos in Japan to deal with potentially faulty airbags, right after Takata warned that additional repairs could be needed. Throughout the previous six years, Takata has recalled about 16 million vehicles globally for defective airbags. At least 4 deaths have been linked to the faulty airbags, Reuters reported.
Owners of recalled autos can make an appointment with their dealers to repair the trouble. Dealers are instructed to replace the passenger airbag inflators devoid of charge, but if the components are not on hand or in stock, dealers will post a warning sign on the passenger door informing riders not to sit in the front passenger seat till the airbag is fixed, USA Now reports.
A government website meant to let owners check whether or not their automobile was on the recall list was out of commission on Tuesday. Calls to an operator on the agency’s hotline were routinely place on hold, the New York Instances reported. According to NBC News, below is the NHTSA's new list of impacted models.
BMW -- 627,615 total quantity of potentially impacted cars:
Chrysler -- 371,309 total quantity of potentially impacted vehicles:
Ford -- 58,669 total quantity of potentially impacted autos:
General Motors -- undetermined total quantity of potentially affected automobiles:
Honda -- five,051,364 total quantity of potentially affected autos:

M-in-Law no further hot gases needed.

After a serious accident best thing is to die ,be reincarnated as rural semen or some such, rather than end up in siamese triage,a patient as eaten by a snake while waiting on a gurney a while back.

Chance of anyone attributing injury in the event of a 10 year old car crash in thailand to a faulty airbag is near 0.
Chance of any possible damages awarded being anywhere remotely near the cost of a recall, less than 0.
    Ergo, no recall.

Honda Thailand Recalls 17,300 Cars After Faulty Airbag Deaths

    Bangkok Post
    November 23, 2014
    Writer: Nanchanok Wongsamuth

Honda is recalling more than 17,300 vehicles in Thailand following a death linked to defective airbags in one of its cars.

The move is part of a new round of recalls of about 170,000 Honda vehicles in Europe and Asia.

In the most recent round of airbag explosion reports disclosed on Nov 13, and the first outside the US, Honda said a pregnant Malaysian died in a car crash in July after the driver's airbag failed to deploy properly. The Honda City was registered in Brunei and manufactured in Thailand, while the airbag was produced in the US.

At least five deaths — all in Honda cars — have been linked to defective airbags produced by Japan's Takata Corp. More than 14 million vehicles from several automakers have been recalled due to concerns that the airbags can explode, sending metal debris into the car.

According to an announcement on its website, Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co will recall back 17,369 units sold in Thailand. The recall will cover the 2003-2004 models of the City, with 14,439 units produced in 2003 and the rest in 2004.

There has been no accidents linked to these vehicles in Thailand, said a Honda Thailand spokesperson.

Honda said the problem is related to the inflator of the airbag. A Honda investigation revealed a problem in the airbag supplier's production process. "There is a possibility that the inflator might deliver a higher pressure than normal in the case of a frontal accident," said the Honda statement.

Honda's 200 dealers nationwide will submit letters to customers who have purchased the model to have their airbags replaced for free, starting from the end of November.

Takata, which has factories in North America, also produces airbags for Toyota, BMW, Chrysler, Mazda, Nissan, Ford, Subaru and Mitsubishi.

Neal McCarthy, Asean communications director at Ford Motor Company, said no Ford vehicles in Thailand are affected, since Takata is not a Ford supplier for either of its plants in Thailand.

Takata and Honda Motor Co are currently under investigation by the US Senate Commerce Committee over the airbag defects and the vehicle recall process.

Honda recalls 17,300 cars after faulty airbag death | Bangkok Post: news

A bit confusingly worded as the first sentence sounds as though there was a death in Thailand due to the airbags, yet further on in the article it indicates no accidents have been linked in Thailand.

I have a toyota hilux vigo, three months ago i had a letter from toyota head office, two letters in fact, one in english and one a week later in thai, informing me that when my car is next serviced, which will probably be next month, they will be checking a "spiral cable electrical airbag connection" that may under certain conditions cause a problem.

the check will take one hour, if any fault is found the parts will be replaced and the whole shebang will be free.

Honda Reports Another Death in Exploding Airbag Crisis

    The Nation / AFP
    June 15, 2015

TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese automaker Honda has reported a new death linked to an exploding air bag crisis -- bringing the global total to seven fatalities and scores more injuries -- which sparked the recall of millions of vehicles.

The company on Monday confirmed that a woman in Louisiana died in April after the faulty inflator in her 2005 Honda Civic’s airbag ruptured, firing metal shrapnel at her.

The confirmation came after Honda’s US unit said Friday it had reported the woman’s death to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The announcement marks the latest chapter in a snowballing crisis for Tokyo-based airbag supplier Takata, which last month agreed to double a US recall to a record of nearly 34 million vehicles made by some of the world’s biggest automakers.

The defect -- thought to be linked to a chemical propellant that helps inflate the airbags -- can cause them to deploy with explosive force, sending metal shrapnel hurtling toward drivers and passengers.

Honda, which is appointing a new president this week to help it navigate the crisis, is the most heavily affected by the recall, which has also affected Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, and Germany’s BMW.

A senior Takata executive told US lawmakers earlier this month that the company -- one of the world’s biggest airbag makers --- was still searching for the main cause of deadly explosions.

Kevin Kennedy, executive vice president at Takata’s US arm, said it has already focused on the possibility that instability of the main ammonium nitrate propellant in its airbag inflators could be to blame in some circumstances.

But that is not the only issue, he added, and "we do not have the definitive root cause".

US legislators pressed the company on why it continued to manufacture inflators with the explosive chemical, arguing that it appears to be the reason why dozens of Takata airbags have inflated with excessive force.
