One the subject of crashes, I was side-swiped by a truck in Tokyo and went down hard in my Hein Gericke V-Pilot jacket (I had the matching pants but wasn't wearing them) and it held up great, and it was cheap- maybe $250- I still have it somewhere.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

It was Japan- they're used to foreigners riding around without pants over there- the funny part was crashing DIRECTLY in front of a police station- I was surrounded by cops and orange cones before my head stopped spinning.

Talking about motor cycle gloves, my brother was attempting to climb a very steep climb, he came off, while the bike and himself were sliding back down the said slope, his hand went into the rear sprocket. When he stopped he said to his friends, find my glove will ya, my finger is still in it.

Yup- I know two guys that lost fingers in the rear sprocket- one reached down to clear debris from the chain while riding instead of pulling over and got his glove caught (3 finger tips) and another who lost them like a lot of fools do- he put the bike on the center-stand and left it in first gear to oil the chain, got too close and it grabbed his sleeve, and it pulled his hand though the sprocket (2 fingers).

Both these accidents were avoidable- your brother just had bad luck- that stuff happens, especially in a hill-climb where you tend to do an endo near the top.

I just grabbed another piece of gear I've been meaning to buy for years- a Camelbak backpack/hydration system (there are many different ones- this one is a M.U.L.E. model)- I got it for $60 (1875bt) from Amazon on a close-out- most places have it $25-$40 more expensive, though I had to take it in yellow rather than my preferred black (I suppose it's better for visibility)- it will hold 100oz (3 liters) of water, plus it's big enough to carry a helmet and other accessories, and the bite-tube attaches to a helmet so it can be used hands-free- it obviously has uses off the bike as well- hiking, bicycling, etc:

Very nice! I'm looking for one at the moment. I can't find the 100oz MULE for less than 3000 baht here

Note that there's a Camelbak MULE NV model that's about 25% bigger than the standard MULE for storage (though it still holds 100oz of water) and it could be that one you're looking at- it's more $.

There are several companies that will ship them internationally through eBay, though you'll take a hit on shipping.

I can't see the pic, but the '50' leads me to believe it's the standard MULE.

The 50 is the delivery charge. He also sells other models:

    1 Hyrdo Bak (50oz) - 1600b
    2 classic (70oz) - 1900b
    3 Lobo (100oz) - 2800b
    4 M.U.L.E. (100oz) - 3000b

Ah- I thought it was in reference to the storage capacity.

Yeah, those prices are about right for LOS- you could probably save 500 baht through eBay, but that's not enough of a savings to risk having it shipped, plus you might get nailed for import tax.

Yep, its not worth it. Its also not worth it to try and save a bit of money by buying a Thai/Chinese knock off as I'm sure it wouldn't last.

Your mates going to need one big suitcase to bring all these bits over for you!

He brings stuff back from LOS to sell in the States, so he travels over with a couple of large, mostly empty suitcases a few times per year- it works out well for me as he doesn't mind if I fill them up a bit.

As I know I'll still ride in jeans occasionally (though I'm shopping for perforated leather pants- I need to try on that Fieldsheer jacket in post #20 to see if it fits, and then might buy the matching pants- in black- that will attach to them via a zipper) I would like to get a little hip-and-ass protection (as I am still not sure if I want kevlar jeans), so I'm shopping for padded/armored shorts that will fit under jeans.

I looked at the matching shorts to accompany the shirt in the OP, but they're too bulky and are meant to go under leathers- I'm considering a pair of EVS Impact Shorts, which provide some hip and tailbone protection.

Not a bad deal for $50 (~1500 baht)- they're very similar to bicyclist shorts with thicker pads:

The Fieldsheer jacket was delivered to my friend's house- he tried it on and it's quite snug on him, which means it will be too tight on me, so I'm gonna let him keep it. As much as I'd love to get a Dainese 2-piece suit, I can't justify it for $1400 for the model I like (plus tailoring as I can't wear anything off-the-rack) so I'm now considering an AGV Sport perforated leather pants/jacket combo for ~$500, which- considering the reviews- seems like a great value in terms of protection and features, and they'll zip together with a 180* zipper.

I plan to get the perforated Willow pants and the Tornado jacket (in either all black or black/white/red), which I think will allow enough airflow to be (barely) livable in LOS.

Now all I need to do is decide on gloves and I'm set.

Oh yeah- I'll have to buy a new bike as well- that's gonna be the interesting part in what I expect to be a brains vs. balls struggle (though balls always wins in the bike selection department for me).

Yeah- the old-school guys were so tough they never got injured when they crashed- they just don't build humans like they used to.

I'm just one of those sissies that would rather leave leather than skin on the road if I happen to come in contact with it again- I've done it before without proper gear and didn't enjoy it.

I'm considering another Hayabusa (I had a 2000 and would like a 2nd-gen model) or a new ZX-14R- they're both really expensive, though, so I'll need a couple of business things to work out to justify getting one of them. Stupid bikes for LOS, but they're what I like.

Mostly decorative stuff- he brings back samples and then takes orders for bulk shipments, generally from Chiang Mai.

I need to correct something I posted earlier- some of the companies I've been buying from will indeed ship overseas- note that Motorcyclegear.com would ship the jacket/pants combo listed above via USPS priority mail (3-5 days delivery time) for a rate of ~$75, which would total about 17,500 baht (though that doesn't include import tax) to get everything to LOS- that's certainly way less than you could buy any decent name-brand leather clothing over here- obviously smaller items like gloves would be much cheaper to ship.

Aim for the Kwaka, it's faster than the Busa now. Also I believe it's the fastest accelerating production bike within a mile. Or summat like dat.

Yeah, I'm familiar with both bikes and have ridden them (though I've ridden the previous ZX-14, I haven't ridden the newest Kawi, and I know how powerful it is)- if I find a used, well-sorted 2008-2011 Busa I would consider it, but if I'm able to buy a brand-new bike it will probably be the ZX-14R.

In any case that will be a few months away- for now I'm concentrating on my gear.
