Really glad I withheld my "Shiny Toy" syndrome a couple of weeks ago and didn't buy the Hero2.

GoPro survives 5 years in seawater

Lost GoPro found after five years at sea

    05/02/2014

A GoPro camera which spent almost five years in the Firth of Thames (New Zealand) shows messages in a bottle may have a digital equivalent.

A Waikato couple found the Hero GoPro among "flotsam" after a storm about two weeks ago and a Facebook campaign led them to the owner - now in England.

The waterproof case made it hard to identify the discovery, but Mr Hall took it off, located the memory card, and plugged it into their laptop. The last of the eight short films on the card was taken in February 2009, and finished with the camera sinking to the sea floor.

A screen grab of a man in the videos was posted on Facebook; Within 10 hours, the man in the video was identified as Tom Kelly, who now lives in Birmingham.

Mr Kelly lost the camera the first time he tried using it, wakeboarding with friends around a kilometre off the Thames Coast.

He tried to do a jump and face-planted.

"By the time I had pulled my face back into place I realised my nice new GoPro had been swallowed up by sea monsters," he said.

"Never in a million years did I think I would ever see it again, let alone hearing the camera made it back to solid ground after so long under water."

The camera's "perfect" condition also amazed the finders.

"If you put a new battery in it, I'd say it would work. There's no damage to the camera that I can see and there's no moisture inside it," Mr Hall said.

He explained the situation to GoPro when he contacted them to list the serial number and even they were surprised, he said.

not the only one, plenty of similar tales on Youtube, incl this one from January 2014

Went diving at Corona Del Mar Jan 4, 2014. We used our Gopro Hero 3 Black Edition. While diving my girlfriend and I found this GoPro Camera. It looks like the first GoPro Hero model. We took it home, dried it, tried it out and is working just fine. The case is a little corroded but in very good condition! The memory card still works, if anyone knows this kid let me know!

    followed by:
Ron, that's unbelievable!!! That's my son's go pro! He can't believe that somebody found it. He keeps looking at the video of himself. It seems surreal. That day he attached it to his kickboard and it fell off, he was so bummed.

Wish they had these when I was younger and running with the bulls in Pamplona my brownie didn't quite capture the action, maybe I could try again for my 70th.

I had the gopro1 which I used to make movies in the ship engine room,
on mountain bikes, trials bikes, etc. Camera is amazingly wide angle
and jitter free, even mounted on the handlebars. Check out some
youtube videos of B.C. downhill mountainbiking or surfing or even better ...
"the birdmen" Almost always it is a HD Hero used.
