I doubt that, probably a completely different word.Originally Posted by JaiYinYin
Seeing as people are only recently aware of the disease, I'd say that the Thai version is simply a transliterated version from English. The reason the op's missus doesn't know it (nor mine) is that it's not a commonly known disease in Thailand amongst the general population.Originally Posted by kingwilly

I didn't even know what it was.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
After looking, it is more commonly referred to as urethritis in men and cervicitis in females.
My wife refers to it as hee nong!![]()
Are you sure about that - it is one of the more common STDs in the world, and I would presume it is rather rampant in Thailand, and in the sex industry in particular as the symptoms are supposed to be rather mild - actually many women are infected without even knowing about it. Scary, as it can lead to infertility in women.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

Exactly, hence "not commonly known in Thailand". If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't matter.Originally Posted by Whiteshiva

Yes, I'm sure about that.
We now know that it is a very common STD, but until fairly recently, it wasn't well known in the west. Therefore, it's safe to assume that knowledge of it in Thailand is even lower due to poor levels of health education here.
I will ask my designer what the Thai name for it is when I see her next. Her mother is a top level cancer research doc in Thailand and I'm sure will have heard of it.

Try....Clah-mid-ee-yah.
Also have you approached the issue of 'crabs' !!
Gonorrhea is 'nong nai' (หนองใน)
It might be 'nong nai teyam' (หนองในเทีย)
I never thought i would get such a large response for this thread, its a great forum this. and no ^^ she will probably think im on about boo for som tam.
