A MAN is recovering after he was stabbed with the bill of a swordfish measuring almost one metre.
It is believed the 28-year-old victim was drinking with friends when a 26-year-old man, who was with another group, approached him and asked for some beer.
When the man refused, the beer-seeker walked home and collected the swordfish bill -- measuring 84cm. He then returned and allegedly used it to stab the first man.
Police believe it is the first reported incident of a stabbing with a swordfish bill. The victim was taken to a clinic for initial treatment and then moved to Royal Darwin Hospital.
He was in a stable condition last night nursing a minor stab wound to his shoulder.
The alleged attack happened at Nauiyu in the early hours of Thursday.
Officer-n-charge of Daly River police Steve Rankine said police were told by witnesses.
"Police were notified by community members that a man had presented to the health clinic with a stab wound to his left side shoulder region," he said.
"The victim was conscious and walking -- the wound was not considered life threatening but he was sent to Royal Darwin Hospital as a precaution.
"The alleged offender took the weapon away and it was later seized by police.
"No similar incidents have been noted before."
Police have charged a 26-year-old man with aggravated assault, going armed with an offensive weapon, doing a dangerous act while intoxicated and unlawfully causing bodily harm.
