    Rats

For a couple of weeks we know there has been a pair of rats in the roof space. They even managed to find a way into the kitchen a couple of times.
I saw one last week and was running around after it like a mad man.
A couple of days ago we heard a new sound. The weight of the footsteps and the loud voice gave it away as a biggish lizard. Wife says it's a small monitor.
I like the small reptiles because they eat mozzies. Good news for everyone but the mozzies.
Tonight we heard the footsteps followed by a serious squeaking or more like screaming of agony as the lizard ate the rat. Not sure if that is the first rat sandwich our new green friend has enjoyed but I have decided I like the bigger lizards as well.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

    ^^^^^^^

Not in Semarang but I do go there from time to time.
I don't really do anything here at all. I'm unjobbed, as my wife says.

    Indonesia, like Malaysia, has sambal.
It's basically crushed chilli with tomato and a few other things.
It varies in taste and how spicy it is.
It starts at "fuck me, that's hot" and goes right up to, "Put a bog roll in the fridge ready".

They even have restaurants dedicated to selling the stuff.

Spicy food is pretty normal out here but some have the ultimate.

Zalie nasi gila (Zalie's crazy rice) serves the hottest thing I have ever had. It even makes my eyes water and I can eat rocket fuel.

Back to those bikes. (The type with wheels not the female sort.)

    Sewing machine.
    They wander around repairing clothes.

There is also a little industry repairing shoes.

Sweet sambal (bullshit - they had no idea of the meaning in the restaurant).
    It was bloody lovely.

No worries. I know it's about as tasteful as a turd in your lunch but I'm scared of my wife.
That and there is something satisfying about crapping in a posh bog.

My kid crapped on the floor a few days ago. I did snap a photo. Want me to post it?

The place looks so incredibly clean. Is that par for the course everywhere?

BTW, great thread. Any food pics?

There is something horribly disturbing about these two posts coming back to back! Internet forums rule!

PS: Fred, don't do it. I think (and hope) it's against a rule somewhere and anyway would totally spoil a fun thread. If you really must post it then put it in the Kitchen forum and go down in a blaze of (in)glory.

OK. I'll skip the crap and just post some pictures of the causes of it.

I just found one of the nasi gila (crazy rice)
That chicken sauce is rocket fuel.

I usually pop to the little shop next door and but a couple of bottle of coke to drink with the meal.
Over here you have to return the bottle or pay for it so I have to tell them I will drink it next door and take the bottle back after.

    Martabak

Sort of a folded pancake with veg inside. Very nice too.
Have a look at them being made.

Pretty much every town or area has a 'special' food that is native to that place.
In Wonosobo, Central Java, It's mie onklok (Shaken mie)
It's name comes from the vigorous shaking while it's being made.
It's noodles and veg in a watery soup served with chicken sate.
Not that many places serve the stuff but there is a place on the South road out of the town that serves nothing else and they are busy.

    Road laws.

In the larger towns and cities, there are laws and they are even sometimes enforced.
If you don't wear a helmet or the bike is a mess, reasonable chance you will get a cop having a pop at you.
In the small towns and villages anything goes.

This is a bacak (Pronounced baychack) or peddle taxi that some bugger has decided to bung a motorbike back end on.

I bought a dining table about christmas time.

Here, local shops are often factory shops so they make the stuff in the back.

A farm is often just a field with very poor farmers that earn sod all and a bit for their work.

    Bikes again.
They also use them as taxis. Rp5000 will get you 1km or so with a bit more to get 2km.

Schools here have a serious culture of respect.

At the start of the first lesson and the end of the last each day, the kids all shake the teacher's hand in the manner above.

The guys in Thailand will know you have to pay in hospitals.
Those in the UK may be surprised to learn people, including kids, get turned away from hospitals if they don't have the cash. I saw a kid who had been involved in a motorbike crash. The lass was in a lot of pain and her face was a bloody mess including her bottom lip ripped open.
