TD's missing members?

According to the stats. there are about Members: 3,546 currently registered at the TD.

When I check the Member List there are about 98 pages of members listed, with 30 members per page. By my calculation that makes about 2,940 registered members.

Q. Where are the missing 600 members then?

I also note that about 1,050 registered members (about 30% of the TD membership) have never posted, i.e their post count is momentarily 0.

Q. What are these missing 1050 members doing, just browsing until something interests them?

PS. I was never any good at maths, so I could be incorrect in my calculations.

Ah, so you've completed a similar exercise elsewhere then? The next time I'm at a loose end I shall check the Ajarn & TV stats.

When I check the Ajarn Member List there are about 160 pages of members listed, with 40 members per page. By my calculation that makes about 6,400 registered members.

you will find that some of them actually are proper members and do post, when the forum was first opened no email confirmation was necessary.

Not a criticism of TD by any means but most forums vaunt the number of members (as well as the number of posts , most on line ever , online now etc etc) so there is no incentive to diminish one's statistics is there ?

If we at the TD didn't care about the Ajarn & TV, then they wouldn't be mentioned so often, would they. There is a rivalry (friendly hatred), between them & us which stretches back even further than the days of the rubberbucket.

That is very true and I think that you will find that on most forums 5% of the members contribute 80% of the posts.
I just made those figures up so don't quote me, just a guess.

Does one thread represent a fixation? I'm just amused at just how much importance message boards attach to the number of members they have. Of course I can see in the case of the Ajarn & TV, why that might be the case, as they make a healthy living from advertising. Still, if I were an advertiser, I wouldn't want to spend my money based on raw figures such as number of registered members. I'd want to see active members & pages viewed stats.

If a forum has a million registered but only ten of them post then what does that tell you about the forum ?

So here are some TV stats.

We have 49,082 registered members

The TV have 5 members categorized as dead, RIP. (although they are still classed as being registered )

The TV have 2,320 members categorized as banned. (although they are still classed as being registered ) - About 30 of those niks banned are mine.

The TV have a whopping 25,800 members who have never posted, that's about 50% of their registered membership.

On the plus side their registered member count of 49,082 is about the same as the number listed in their Member List, 49,400. The TV have less than 400 missing members.
