you seem to post quite often about these people you're 'ignoring'.

Yes, because I want to encourage others to do the same as me. If we all blocked the idiots they would be forced to change their behaviour. I am quite sure that you could easily name at least six people on my list. You know as well as I do which posters offer only abuse/ drivel in the hope of provoking conflict. They think it is smart to be disruptive. They have limited knowledge themselves and all they can offer is to criticise and attack others without need. One poster has actually boasted about getting rid of a productive member by abusing him at every opportunity. This boast has been made in the last few days and was backed up with words which showed he would continue to act badly.

If you have read that, it seems your ignore function has a malfunction - or is a complete waste of time.

I'll go out on a limb to suggest that those who engage in ignore functions are largely enabling blocking functions towards certain individuals from redding said member.....as one can still read posts by those who've been blocked by clicking on the link next to the particular post. And I suspect that, in real practice, the offended does read those posts/members that are supposedly ignored - outta curiosity.

Quite silly.
