Fasting diets could increase risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, research finds
Fasting diets may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, a new study has said.
Skipping breakfast may be bad for the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight off infection, research has revealed.
Researchers say the study, carried out in mice, is among the first to show that skipping meals triggers a response in the brain that negatively affects immune cells.
The findings could lead to a better understanding of how chronic fasting may affect the body in the long term.
Researchers aimed to better understand how fasting for anything from a few hours to a more severe fast of 24 hours affects the immune system.
They analysed two groups of mice – one ate breakfast right after waking up, and the other group had no breakfast.
Blood samples were collected when they woke up, four hours later, and then eight hours later.
When looking at the fasting group, the scientists saw a difference in the number of the white blood cells called monocytes that are made in the bone marrow and travel through the body, where they play many critical roles, from fighting infections, to heart disease and cancer.
Researchers found 90% of these cells disappeared from the bloodstream of the fasting mice, and the number further declined at eight hours. Meanwhile monocytes in the non-fasting group were unaffected.
In the fasting mice, the researchers found that the cells travelled back to the bone marrow to hibernate, and production of new cells in the bone marrow diminished.

I have never given any real thought to this before. Some sources strongly advising whole grains for a healthy diet and you say they are processed foods to be avoided. I can see that Kellogs anything is processed beyond what I want to eat, but a bag of muesli without any additives is bad for you? I don't understand where the line is on 'processing', a bag of unsalted nuts has been 'processed' to some extent but does that make them unhealthy? How about granary bread?
If you avoid anything that has been through a factory then where do you get your carbs? Bread, rice and pasta would all be off the table.
I'm genuinely interested to know. I have always pretty much eaten what I want and never stopped to read up on the ins and outs. It's only now that my liver is struggling to keep up with the martinis that I need to look at my consumption.
I had the same question, and a doc I know said "Just check the glycemic index". Bread, rice, and pasta are indeed off the table with their high GI, but fruits and vegetables can bring back the carbs. I just want to make sure I don't spike my insulin which causes the body to go into fat storage mode. Muesli has a fairly high glycemic index but if you don't eat too much, it is likely okay.
You Make Your Own Luck
BS, question what you are told, why not burn fat instead of adding more overload to your body! Yes I know its hard to break the programming from those lovely people that care about your health, think about it, are you going to die if you don't eat breakfast, your stopping your body from burning fat and boosting insulin, one of the biggest fallacies out there are is eating breakfast is most important meal - utter bollocks, the other one is the crap they tell you about Cholesterol, but lets be honest, its good for their business............
Its your health, It doesn't affect me nor do I give a fuck what you do, just annoys me when folks repeat such utter crap without any knowledge or thought, you have a brain - try use it for your health's sake
Theres lots of material out there that tells the truth - sure you have realised by now that using google as a search engine for health gives inverted results........
“There’s no human requirement for grains. That’s the problem with the USDA recommendations. They think we’re hardwired as a species to eat grains. You can get by just fine and meet every single nutrient requirement that humans have without eating grains. And grains are absolutely poor sources of vitamins and minerals compared to fruits and vegetables and meat and fish.”
Ironically, since we’re often told that whole grains are the best for our health, the high-fiber bran portion of grain – a key part that makes it a whole grain — actually contains many of the anti-nutrients. But the problem isn’t only that there are superior sources of nutrients; grains actually contain anti-nutrients that may damage your health.
“Grains are the seeds of a plant. They’re its reproductive material, and plants don’t make their reproductive material to give away for free to other animals. If they did they’d become extinct, and so the evolutionary strategy that many plants, particularly cereal grains have taken to prevent predation is to evolve toxic compounds so that the predator of the seeds can’t eat them, so that they can put their seeds in the soil where they’re meant to be to grow a new plant and not in the gut of an animal to feed it.”
this is all getting a bit cereal
I have a small bowl of muesli and bran flakes with a load of blueberries in the morning, doesn't fill me up and keeps me regular.
There is no one size fits all solution here as everyone is different, you have to find the right balance/eating habit that works for you and you generally have 50-60 years at least to do that.
I do eat brekkie and i don't eat after 4pm, generally, but i do eat three times a day, not always but generally.
I'd have completely agreed until recently. I eat what I want, never had a problem. However, it seems my body wasn't telling me me much about martini. According to the doc it isn't a balanced diet, despite the herbs in the vermouth and even 3 olives don't make up one of the 5-a-day veggies. Then recent tests showed that the liver is sub-optimal. Apparently the bar room doctors who told me that one alcohol-free day a week was enough for the liver to recover were wrong. So the time has come to think a bit about intake. When you start thinking and start reading you find many contradictory claims out there, even from sources that appear to be independent from corporate sponsorship. I'm not sure that I have the patience to read it all and try to sift the claims.
Moderation is the key. I have had 6 alcohol free days this week so a moderate amount of gin and tonic is on the menu tonight.

I am leaving home today to embark on a mission to try as many cheap breakfasts as I can during the next two weeks. If I spend more than 60 baht at any time, I will be very upset. I eat when I am hungry and only drink alcohol in the dark. Cornflakes in Kalasin, muesli in Mukdahan?
Re: the "breakfast is the most impt meal of the day" - I think that's true if your job/ work is very physical & you'll lose a lot of calories that way. But if your work is mostly sedentary/ desk job, then the calories accumulate, the unused energy gets stored as fat. Then there are some studies which say that abdominal fat is VERY bad for you.
Re: my alcohol intake, I remember during the lovkdowns that Shutree and I made homemade wines.I think that contributed to my weight gain too. I was drinking 1 250-ml portion of wine daily, and my homemade wines contained a lot of sugar. Nowadays, I've switched to lemon-water (or kalamansi-water (a small lime here in PH) with a splash of rhum if I want the buzz during evenings.
Nowadays, it's more of maintaining my weight but I'm not stressing over it. I can't eat as much rice & fatty foods like in my teens or 20s, but that's life.![]()
I started reading about health, food, supplementation well over 40 years ago, helped fill in the gaps in offshore life, cowboy books got boring! The modern day food pyramid that corporate controlled doctors push is so flawed that the only conclusion that you can come too is they are feeding there fellow corporate businesses like Big Pharma, its working well, the same people own or control all the big corporations, the last thing they want is a healthy awake population, again - working well isn't it ....
I could certainly loose some weight and eat like a sparrow however I'm reluctant to.give up my daily beer imbibing. Why should I? I enjoy it ,I eat a lean breakfast of muesli a bit of fruit, have a sandwich for lunch and some fruit, I eat a small dinner . I will crack on with that for a while
Him and taxi, birds of a feather.
It’s no coincidence they’re both elderly and childless themselves.
Your math is off there, most of the research shows a pound of muscle burns five to six calories a day at rest (compared to fat at about two calories a day).
Run his physical stats through a calorie calculator and even with maximal physical activity added in maintenance for him would be around 4,000 calories.
There's just no way anyone can eat 7,000 calories a day without adding significant fat--even on a shit tonne of PEDs as he undoubtedly is.
