There is a similar function on the threadmill at my gym. Fast run at 5% inclination then slow down, 12 times. I usually do it at the end of the session, it's good to build endurance.
Yes, I'm doing this... running for miles is so boring... I don't know how people can sustain the will to go on, playing some kind of sport seems so much more interesting.
Agree with you. Having fun is the most important. As you reach a certain age, you know your chances to be world champion at any sport are behind you. But you can still have fun. My goal in staying in good shape is never be in a situation when I've to say, sorry I'm too old to do that. Last time I really enjoyed the benefit of the time spent at the gym was when we took a boat to go upstream on the river Kwai. Then all the people my age stayed in the boat and I jumped in the river with the kids to swim back to our starting point. It was really good fun.
The things we regret most is the things we didn't do

Good on ya! Never say "too old" or give up!

Older folk can be just as physically fit and competent as the average, at least.

I try to exercise a minimum of an hour a day, yoga, stretches, squats, resistance bands, some weights and walking, then I do two days (@ 4 hrs/day) a week training.

Running on concrete is for suicidal fools.

In training, I keep up easily with the younger lot (male and female), and my age and experience (practice makes perfect ) sees me out-performing most of the younger 'green' practitioners, so I instruct a bit.

It's amazing how you can improve your physical health, stamina etc. at any age, just by taking it slowly, eating the right foods and having a positive attitude.

Lovely to move around the mat, attacking or defending, twisting, dodging, throwing someone, being thrown, fall, roll stand up, move back in.

Did my back in two weeks ago, right on lumbar 2/3, left side turned to agony.

Tried stretching and hot water massaging, some relief but no fix.

Got myself to the doctor and he gave me a big shot of an anti-inflammatory and some some pain killers (strong.., fixed!!

Until the drug wore off a couple of days later and the same old pinched nerve in the lumbar area would stop me from moving again!

So.... I found a couple of stretches on youtube.....instant cure!

First one was to lay flat on your belly, then raise yourself on your elbows, arching the back, pelvis down.

The second one was lying on my back, arms outstretched to the sides, then fold knees up to chest, legs crossed at ankles,...then twist legs to right, and hold for 30 seconds.
    Repeat for other side.

WARNING those chairs you sit on all day will fwk yer spine faster than anything!

I agree, but high intensity training by definition is not slow and easy.

^ There are different kinds of interval training. Some is/can be high intensity, some not necessarily so.

The whole point people are finally coming to realize is that this running for hours bullshit is not for the average joe or jane...Don't get me wrong...I admire the true natural runners...But such grace is rare...Like they're walking on air...But when I see a lumpen lout destroying him or her "good" self, I shake my head...Certainly cringeworthy...

I doubt there's any animal that prolongs this torture "in the wild"...But they have their intervals of "high intensity," like when you almost drop yer whiskey glass and gotta "test yer reflexes" to catch it...That's enough in itself to kill a few here...Heh...

Then there're the fckwits that come on here pretending to be "runners" and chipping away with their nonsense when they don't know "shit"...I admit I'm not a runner, but have done my share of the bullshit in training, and at a pretty fast pace, as well...

If you can't run continuous sub 5-minute miles, you're not a natural runner...And you're gonna hurt yerself...

Of course yer gonna start slow, you fckwits...Same as if you're going out for that useless run...

The average joe/jane wouldn't make it a telephone-pole length, regardless...

    Heh...

You really need to ditch the arrogant, know it all attitude. You are a no mark amateur and it shows.

Quit with the 'I'm not a runner but', bullshit. Stick to the childrens game threads, you are eminently suited to it.
