Just a quick caution. On exercise, don't try to do it all at once. Start slow and build up. Personally, I'd do some long walks first, gradually picking up the pace and distance before I started biking. As with all exercise, when it starts feeling good and easy, add to it. I'm rebuilding my left arm after shoulder surgery, and I was doing 50 reps of all exercises yesterday with a 20 lb dumbell. Today, I increased to a 25 lb dumbell, and cut the reps in half. Now, I'll start gradually building up the reps again. Slow and steady - you'll get there.

Other than staying away from processed foods and sweets, the biggest thing is to reduce your carbo intake.... potatoes (white), bread (whole grain is OK), rice (brown rice is better) carbos generate sugars. Low carbo beer is better than the normal stuff (San Miguel light and Singha light are two readily available here), limit the intake. Myself I have mostly switched to red wine.

Not at type 2 yet but a blood test a year ago put me within in whiskers of being so. The meds mentioned above have worked pretty well. Took some time to get the dosage and time of day right but now OK.

The pain in your legs and feet (especially toes) are a sign of the nerves dying due to poor circulation - a direct result of high sugar levels. If it goes untreated or ignored it can lead to amputation of toes or feet or part of the lower leg... Friend of mine lost his leg to the knee. Keep a close eye on injuries of the extremities that don't heal properly or any unusual bruising or pain.

You didn't mention high blood pressure but they go hand in hand, so working on either is beneficial to both conditions

there is a daily newsletter called Living with Diabetes from Everyday Health that has some excellent ideas on battling the issues. Lots and Lots of food stuff that is very helpful deciding on diet changes etc. I recommend it highly.

Here's an update on my diabetes for anyone interested.

This is a picture of me last January from my Kanchanaburi bike thread.

    https://teakdoor.com/thailands-travel...a-scooter.html

    Here I am now now.

    I am 24 kilos lighter.

I still have a long way to go but I'm exercising everyday and have a low-carb diet.

I still can't give the drink up yet but I have cut right down. And only drink Bourbon and coke zero with lemon. For some reason it doesn't affect my blood sugar at all. I do know that a diabetic should not drink and sooner or later it's gotta go.

I'm feeling great though and really happy so far.

    Cheers.

    DsD.

    Good on you mate.

We have had a few good outings when you make your way down here and have been both the worse for wear after it.

Keep on keeping on and get that weight down.

One final thing. The time has come for exercise.

Any recommendations on where I can get a half-decent mountain bike from that will hold my frame or do you know of a good, second-hand one for sale?

Haven't read the thread, so, I'm jumping in here.

You will more than likely be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. This is the one that's associated with crap food and life-style.

Yes, it is controllable, but, you have to remember that this is a chronic, incurable disease that just gets worse as time goes by.

The treatment is going to depend at what stage you are at when you get diagnosed.

If they have caught it early enough, you will be classified as "pre-diabetic". This can be controlled by diet and exercise.

If you are already diagnosed as diabetes type 2 and it's still mild (like me), you take two tablets a day forever, watch what you eat and exercise.

The next stage when pills can't control it, is insulin injections.

What diabetes does, is destroy capillary blood vessels. This is why diabetics can go blind and have to have bits of there extremities lopped off, now and again. Circulation is what gets you.

It is a pain-in-the-arse, but, there are a lot worse things to have. You eventually get used to the changes and don't think about it.
How you behave now is going to have a direct effect on your longevity.

    Good luck.

Interesting thread. I've just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Was always going to happen as Ive had problems with sugar levels all my life even when I was 21 and fit as fuk. First picked up when I was blood tested for my profession.

I'm 55 now and weigh 76 kg so its not a weight issue. I exercise and work out .

    Inherited for sure, thanks mum.

I'm off to the Doctor on Wednesday for my Diabetes registration and to be told all about what I cant eat and what I must do.

looks like my days of consuming my home brew are gone which is a piss off as I enjoy a beer a few times a week.

    Nice retirement present innit.

Ive been having regular blood test since Ive been 21 years old, my blood sugar levels where always dodgy and high end so Ive always known the day would come when I would be eventually diagnosed with diabetes.

Funny thing is I feel fine and have none of the symptoms associated with this disease, maybe because I carry no weight, keep myself fit and eat well.

I'm thinking its going to be a big change in diet cutting out carbs and doing something about my alcohol intake.

I don't drink a lot of piss but do like the odd 6 beer's especially in company.

If I was a real smart guy I would of lived like a monk from the first time this sugar problem was diagnosed but fuk that EH, a guy must live and I've lived it Large.

Ive done really well to get this far down the track so this diagnosis is no surprise what so ever, actually I'm glad its happened now before I fuk off over seas on my travels again .

I can get all my shit sorted here in Perth and be well tooled up concerning what I need to do to keep a handle on this, Ive got a heap of Super money to spend and I don't want to fucking die before the vast majority of it is consumed.

My mum died at 62 so I am a tad concerned about that as my make up is the same as my dear mums.

    Fucking hell EH.

Anyway mate, you really need to get those blood tests done regularly and that goes for every one.

Problems in the feet are a symptom of diabetes as it fucks up the blood vessels and restricts blood flow so extremities are the first stop.

My mum had a massive stroke, that scares the living shit out of me after what I seen her go through.

Rather drop dead right now than suffer through that.

Ive got 4 days before the Doctor shoots a rocket up my arse concerning piss drinking so fuk it, I'm getting on the piss tonight and more than likely tomorrow before this gig turns to shit.

My party is over on Wednesday.

Looks like I'll have to replace my piss drinking with some other pass time.

Maybe time to get serious with a woman again.

Now that really is something that makes me shit bricks into my Nappy.

Not looking forward to that at all.

Been very happy cruising around on my own worrying about fuk all.

^ try brewing low carb beer...

Also, what if you stop eating all other carbs? Does that increase your beer allowance?

To be perfectly honest I don't know what is coming regards Dietary change and life style change, I will find out on Wednesday.

What I do know that is once you are diagnosed with diabetes you must seriously get your shit together and get with the program.

If ignored you are at a very high risk of suffering a premature death through heart attack, stroke, loss of limbs or ending up blind.

Diabetes is a very serious gig if left untreated.

I'm quite looking forward to my life style change as I feel real good when hitting the gym and being off the piss, Time to man up I reckon.

I'm in good physical condition now so I'll just step it up with the proper diet and up the exercise.

More than likely end up in the best Physical condition of my life and then get run over by a foking truck.

Last couple of days have been good though trying to power drink 6 months supply of home brew.

Gigs over though. No more piss drinking until I find out from the Doc exactly what sort of Alcohol I can bang down.

Maybe just main line Scotch or some thing.

Got my arse down to the international clinic yesterday for blood tests, They have an old French doctor down there who is half decent got them to check every fucking thing, went and saw the old doc this morning and was told i have high blood suger and high triglycerites, he hasnt ruled out diabetes but took some more blood to run another test that can averadge out your blood suger over the last 3 months, if thats dodgy then it still may not be diabetes might just need a change in diet and lifestyle for a while, ive already started to do that and apart from a 2 day blow out on the piss i went 16 days without it , its been another 4 days of and im back to work teusday for 2 weeks where i will definately be of it, Anyway will see the doc again tomorrow.

Saw the doc again this morning and the blood tests came back good from avereging it out over 3 months, I dont have Diabetes but will need to watch the sugar intake for a while, a bit of diet and exercise will be needed ( already doing that) just need to get those high triglycerides down, At least my piss drinking days arent permanently over, thats the good news, a bit of a wake up call to drink less though
