Crispy Peking Duck - in Chiang Mai?

This was always one of my favourite Chinese dishes when I lived in London, but I've never seen it in Thailand. Well, last week, me and Mrs bb had a short break in Vientiane and we found a restaurant specializing in it.

(If you're interested, turn left out of the Vayakorn Guest House, walk to the first little junction, turn left and it's about 100 metres along on the left hand side).

Anyway, it set me wondering if anyone knows where to find it in Chiang Mai.

For the uninitiated, you get a whole duck, either sliced (as above) or crisp and shredded (below), and you put it in your own little pancakes with spring onion, cucumber and hoisin sauce. Delicious.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

I have never had Peking duck before, I am not a lover of Chinese food, but that actually looks quite nice, they have a place in Central Pattaya that sells it, I may go and try it, assume you don't have to have a whole duck?

^DD what normally happens is you have the Crispy skin in your little "pancakes" and then the duck meat arrives later normally fried with some noodles and veggies. It is great if you can persuade them to hold the MSG.

I can only go by what used to happen in the New World Chinese Restaurant in London's Chinatown, where you could order a half or a whole duck.

Have to agree, those pictures are NOT of Peking Duck. The whole point of Peking Duck is its just the skin (no meat) that it served in the pancakes. In good places, the duck will be 'carved" at the table (the skin taken off) and then the meat/carcass whisked away.

The meat is then normally served separately, either cooked together with noodles, or often as a soup (sometime restaurants serve all three, skin, meat in noodles and bones as soup as three courses). In general, the preparation that is needed for the skin really does no favours for the meat and its not really that good.

The trick is that the skin should not be too oily.

Well, in some places it's called Crispy Aromatic Duck, but in the Vientiane on the menu it was called Crispy Peking Duck in English and Ped Beijing in Thai.

So thanks for your input, nidhogg, you pedantic bastard.

Duck skin in pancakes, hmmmm, doesn't really sound very appealing, don't think I will bother driving all the way to Pattaya for that.

Its actually pretty good when done properly. The mixture of tastes, textures and flavours is pretty awesome. dunno anywhere that does it in Pattaya, but there is one that does it very, very well in Phuket (on top of one of the big asian orientated hotels, forget which), and comparatively, bloody cheap.

If your in Bangkok, Hong Kong Marina at Siam paragon does a good one. Never been to the restaurant, ive only ever got it from food by phone or chef xp (cant remember which), but be sure to order it without the head otherwise you'll get a nasty surprise when it comes.

The Chinese Restaurant in the Royal Cliff complex does it like nidhogg says. Very good it is too. They make a pancake and serve it, then make another as you eat it. There was five serving me, the wife & daughter.

It's not just the skin, you get lots of tender meat too.

Well, not nidhogg, they save up the scraps specially for him, obviously.

Same as benbaa & Patsy. I've always had meat & skin in the places I've been to. Mouth watering, now. Not fair.

The Hotel in Hua Hin does it, but it nearly killed me as I didn't realise it was the whole bloody duck and there was only 2 of us!

Any wanky hotel with a Chinky should do it in CM, Ben.

I've forgotten the location of MBK in Chiang Mai. Could you remind me?
