Around here in the jungle I can only find the normal Thai chilli, weeny skinny little thing it is.
Anyone know where you can pick up other varieties, Habanero or Jalapeņo etc ?

Foodland sometimes has fresh Jalapeños. I pickle them myself.
Larry's Dive on Sukhumvit 22 used to sell them.
For all other chilis I have found Carrefour has the best selection.
I used to buy em fresh here from a gal no longer in business, but they came down from Chiang Rai along with good zuchinni.
And my buddy in Pattaya says that they do have them in the markets there now that are good quality and fresh as he pickles them himself, but I buy by the case from Siam foods that are nacho cut and pickled or you can get them whole pickled from them, if you can get any service, i have had an order in for 3 weeks and not even a fucking email from the cvnt.
Got some decent sized ones at Big C, labelled as cayanne pepers, yet to try them.
Going to Patta Friday so will give that froggie outfit Carrefours a hit.
Thanks for the replies.
Fuk it, come by my place and I give ya a 1/2 case of the sliced/pickled jalapenios I got,, for free too. Ya poor little bastard.![]()

Man dies after chilli-eating contest

A FORKLIFT driver who dared his friend to a chilli-eating contest died hours later.
Andrew Lee, 33, used a bag of home-grown red chillis to make the roaring-hot sauce and then dared his girlfriend's brother, Michael Chadbourne, to eat a spoonful.
Mr Lee then ate a plateful, and had a heart attack shortly after, The Daily Mail reported.
"They had a contest over who could make the hottest chilli sauce," Mr Chadbourne's sister, Claire, said.
"Andrew had used chillies to make Thai dishes before but had never made anything this hot .
"My dad grew the chillies especially for Andrew. The contest was planned and he gave them to him."
Mr Lee, of Edlington, Doncaster, complained of itchy skin as he went to bed.
The next morning, his girlfriend Samantha Bailey, a mother of four, found him unconscious.
Paramedics later pronounced Mr Lee dead at the scene.
"He apparently got into bed at 2.30am and started scratching all over," Mrs Chadboure said.
"His girlfriend scratched his back until he fell asleep. She woke up and he was dead.
"'He was perfectly healthy and the post-mortem showed no heart problems."
Toxicology tests are under way to see whether Mr Lee had a fatal reaction to the sauce.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.
So the Cayenne pepper ones in Big C are Jalapeno's?
They arent very hot, I bought some to make a chili with and had to put some Thai ones in to get any fire. Ive no idea if jalapenos are supposed to be hot or not tho.
Usually, I can find close enough equivalents. Here is a site I find very useful in cross referencing Spice, herbs and other stuff to Thai name.Originally Posted by peterpan

I feel for you. It took me weeks and more emails and calls that I care to remember before they confirmed my first order and then all of my reminders as separate orders, which took another week to reduce to a single first order as per the original. Then after another couple of weeks of futile waiting and more attempts at contact I gave up, which is when they sent an email asking if I still wanted them to deliver all of my orders.
No thanks, with service like that I wouldn't risk anything they delivered.
Jalapenos are not a hot chili. They've got a nice thick body and good pepepr flavor though. Jalapenos can rnge n heat factor by a wide margin. I found that by letting them dry out a bit before picking they had more heat. Fresh Thai chilis have a great balance of spice and flavor I think.Originally Posted by melvbot
Quite often the White-boy's friend up here, Rim Ping, has jalapenos in the fresh produce section. Occasionally they wil lhave Habaneros as well. I haven't seen a hab in there for quite some time though. Now that I have a blender when they do come in stock I am making my own special hot sauce. Aged for about 6 months that is some fine eatin.
You could also try your hand at growing chillies. I had my mum mail me packets of seeds and had a balcony full of herbs and chillies when I was living in Shanghai.
^ DIY > Great idea, cheap and a lot of fun.
They are easy to grow and I used to preserve them.
Herbs of all types are also easy to grow. I used to have lemongrass, various types of mint and lemon scented geraniums. Kept all the mozzies away and used them in potporri as well when dried and in home made candles.
