The South Africans are as keen on there Brai as we are with our BBQ's. Very nice picture by the way.
^^
Our natives do that as well mate, only difference is they rip up the floor boards inside the house and use them for fire wood.
True story.
Sounds like how we make smoked trout back home.Originally Posted by APAX
Yeah I mentioned before stones / coals might be better as you're basically blasting your food with gas fumes especially with the hood down.
Agreed, the gas ones with lava rocks seem better to me, but I have a great ozzie friend who we visit for a barbecue about 3 times a year. Our wives like each other and kids go to the same school. So here is his big barbecue.
I like it because it has the big flat griddle, but its direct fire. May I ask if the direct fire is standard in Australia, as the lava stone type are the norm in America?
Steaks just about done and he has just added the prawns on the griddle part.
The two bottom cuts of meat are marinaded pork fillets. Which are on the top in the last photo.
Its big four burners. Those are not small steaks and fillets. The griddle is about 40% of the overall size. These were on sale for 15,000 at that barbecue store last Christmas. But I was cash short after the flood, and was still thinking about the lava rocks. In hindsight now here in the LOS I would have got it.
One more to really see a barbecue expert at work. Queenslander he is. He had already sauteed off the mushrooms and onions.

Over here the go seems to be 44 gallon drums cut in half with some wire mesh and hot stones / coals over this. I reckon this set-up but using the entire drum, other half for hood, would make a handy oven, lose the gas factor and even add flavour with different woods / coals as mentioned before.
This is a hi-so version of what I mean. It wouldn't be too much to make one yourself out of a 44 g. drum...
Or pig out cooking in one of these...
But simply something common like this...
Set up with the rest of the drum like this...
I might have to have a crack at banging one together.
Though using as an oven I'd imagine heat would be much harder to regulate if not using gas.

I'll confess to have indulged in the abo-esque behaviour of pinching a shopping trolley and using it as a BBQ in my younger years (these pics are ripped from the net not my own).
9999 I don't know where you live but I have some open top 44 Gal drum if you need a drum to start for free.
Cheers Ratch. They sell 1/2 drum simple bbq set-ups on tap for about 600 bt, guessing it would be fairly easy to get hold of a drum, or get a shop to custom make one. I'm in Lamphun.
The drumm around Thailand look very thin wall.
These drum come from Korea they seam to be thicker & being open end it make it easier to clean out.
where are you Ratch?
I'm not the best handy-man. If I was to attempt to construct one I'd seek the help of some friends who are quite handy, have tools, etc.
Wow nice pic's guy's !!
