Much the same here. I asked one of my near neighbours because she had printed a big sign to hang on her gate looking for paid help. I wondered if she had found any. Simple answer, no. She is local to the village and willing to pay a fair rate, still she only found a few people who came and then went. She says people in this village are really lazy and useless. I'm not sure this village is unique.

    All valid points of course...

If the gardener had had time for all this alone, he would have done it. As I'm sure you know, many jobs are three or four times quicker with twp people than one, and sadly for me I am hard wired to help out, I cannot just sit by watching others do a nasty job. I can't change that, and being a Brit I am also hard wired to complain about it afterwards.

AC... ? In a chicken run?

If you think I keep chickens just for eggs then you have missed the entire point of why I do this shit in Isaan and the values and responisbilities I have passed/am passing on to the daughter (who I very much hope will experience the joys of keeping chickens, watching chicks hatch, and collecting fresh eggs with her children, some time in the future).

I could of course get rid of the chickens and buy battery eggs down the supermarket and I'm sure the daughter would gain a lot of life experience doing that. I could also fill in the pond and buy anti-biotic and hormone saturated catfish and tilapia at the market, which would be way more interesting for the daughter who knows how to catch and humanely dispatch a fish and if strongly encouraged, also knows how to gut and clean it. She understands absolutely where her food comes from and what is necessary to bring an animal to the plate, and is I believe more compassionate and caring of where her food comes from, for it.

The pool is hard work... I could grass it over and instead take the daughter for swims in the piss-stinking water at the water park by the zoo. The dogs cause me a lot of grief at times... maybe I should get rid of them and watch 'Dogs doing silly things' videos on Youtube instead?

You get my drift... all said and done, I would be bored out of my mind living in such a place without all this shit to do.

The chickens get their tea around 3pm every day.

Including even more windfall mangoes at the moment...

    They also love water melon.

I am sure that feeding times are the highlights of a chicken's day.

    And then it's payback time.

You have to check everywhere for eggs. You can provide the best nest boxes imaginable, but a chicken will lay it's egg exactly where it chooses.

    A good start.

I disturbed 'Daeng 54' just after she'd laid.

The big brown egg was hers... still warm from the hen.

    Thank you 'Daeng 54!'

I feel under the broody wild hens to retrieve more eggs. Once broody, it's extremely difficult to stop them nesting... other than give them a clutch to hatch.

    Ahoy there, me hearties!

    What's that I spot?

The last egg of the day.

Eight assorted fresh organic Easter eggs... not bad at all!

You can fry 'em, boil 'em or scramble 'em, but for me, best of all with eggs fresh from the hen, is to poach 'em.

If you've ever been hit by fowl cholera, once is enough. It is heart-breaking to lose an entire flock, bird by bird over a couple of weeks, with nit a damn thing you can do about it.

The vaccine costs pennies and today was the day.

1cc dose per bird, with a smaller dose for the small, wild jungle fowl hens. The vaccine is incted into the chest muscle.

However, when considering the size of my cock, a larger dose was used.

Not very scientific, but in the several years since I started vaccinated the chickens, we haven't lost one to fowl cholera.

The system was, catch a bird, vaccinate, and then stick in a cage to avoid a double dose.

We managed all but around six birds, but that's over 80% and should ensure flock immunity. The three noobies weren't vaccinated since the young birds are done on leaving the rearing stations. The six we missed were too distressed and flustered by avoiding capture, so I called it a day before they injured themselves.

At the end of operations the cage and hutches were opened!

    Tomorrow it's the dogs' turn.

    ^^ There's always one...

No, the dogs get parvo, distemper and rabies. If you call in around 10am Topper, I'm sure the vet will have a spare dose for you.

I bet you carry all manner of diseases!

    To rephrase an old joke:

Mendip walks into a bar with a chicken on his shoulder.
The barman says "That's incredible, we've never had one of those in here. Where did you get it?"
The chicken says "Squawk! Somerset, there's millions of them."
