Leaving en masse in 1929, with only the lighthouse keeper remaining behind, most islanders relocated on the mainland, settling on the Northern side of the Inishowen peninsula. For a number of those islanders, and other emigrants before them Inistrahull lighthouse would have been the last glimpse they would have had of Ireland as they departed by ship from Derry City. Surfer Ben Gerring has surgery after losing leg in WA shark attack
A 29-year-old man attacked by a shark while surfing off a beach in Mandurah, south of Perth, has undergone surgery overnight and remains in a critical condition.
Ben Gerring, a fly-in, fly-out heavy machinery operator, lost part of his leg in the attack at a surf spot known as Gearies, off the suburb of Falcon on Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses said his leg was severed above the knee. Other surfers managed to get him to shore where paramedics treated him on the beach.

He was later flown to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), where staff said he had undergone surgery but remained critical.
Department of Fisheries staff have set drum lines at the beach this morning to try to catch the shark, which they believe was a three-metre-long white shark.
In a statement, a department spokeswoman said "a serious threat to public safety exists" and an order had been issued by the director-general "to deploy capture gear in the vicinity of the incident".
Mandurah Boardriders Club President Brian Williams said he arrived at the scene as fellow surfers dragged Mr Gerring onto the beach.
He said the victim had lost a lot of blood.

Woman dies after shark attack at Mindarie
A 60-YEAR-OLD woman has died in a shark attack while diving off Mindarie, 36km north of Perth, just days after surfer Ben Gerring was fatally mauled near Mandurah.
WA Police said the body of the diver had severe injuries consistent with a shark attack.
It’s believed she died instantly. Her family has been notified.
Fishermen told police the shark was bigger than their 5m boat.
Fisheries will redeploy drum lines off Mindarie at first light on Monday morning.
The woman was found in the water about 2km off Mindarie Beach, between One and Three Mile Reefs, just before noon on Sunday.
The woman’s dive partner, a 43-year-old-man, felt something brush past him in the water, Inspector Danny Mulligan said.
