^ Ampur Muang means the main town district of Phetchabun. My home is about 3km from the town center.
Every province (Changwat) in Thailand has only one Ampur Munag which is always the capitol of that province.

About the spelling you are right, there are different ways to spell it and no point arguing over it

Yeah, it can get tricky about Amphur Muang, my address is Tambon Thapon, Amphur Muang, Petchabun. It covers quite a lot of area and Baans (Tambons). Petchabun is the Province but there are different Changwats ie Lomsak. If my Baan came under Lomsak for example then I would be under the Amphur Muang of Lomsak.

If you say you just live in "Amphur Muang" it won't mean anything to anyone unless you say the name of your Tambon (or Baan). If you don't have a Tambon then you would have to say you live in Petchabun.

Like a lot of things here it can be confusing and addresses are the worst. I had a Thai explain me what Muang is and it is basically everythng outside of town.

    Jangwat - Ampur - Tambon - moobaan
While Mueang literally means "city" Ampur Mueang is the capital ampur of it's respective Jangwat. There is only one Ampur Mueang per Jangwat.
Moobaans have names but are usually numbered whenwritten in an address. I live in moo 5, have yet to find out the name.

proper Street addresses will have a number, or usually, two; as in ##/# ( I have only one number for my address and it covers a lot of land with two houses and small (tiny) duplex).
    So the address is usually
    ##/#
    moo #, T. yyy,
    A. zzzz or just zzzz
    Jangwat, Postcode

here in Chiangmai we have an area called (unofficially) "Mueang Gaow" or Old City. This refers to the area inside the moat. It is located in center of A. Mueang
Now why that bright official decided that The name of the capital ampur in each Province or Jangwat should be named "City" I have no idea. maybe the word city was derived fromteh fact Ampur mueang was often the only large "City" in the province in the past. The idea took off; and I do believe the official is now directing either immigration or, at least, the work permit section of the ministry of commerce.

Sorry but this is not correct, at least at the moment . If your Tambon would be under Lomsak then your address would be Tambon Thapon, Ampur Lomsak..... But, Lomsak tries for years already to break away from the province Phetchabun to become it's own province like it happened in some other places, Pratchin Buri and Sa Kaeo come to mind which splitted in early 1993 or Thailands youngest changwat which i belive to be Nong Bua Lamphu which broke of Udon Thani in late 1993. When I started to live in Thailand there where only 74 Provinces, now there are 76 and maybe soon 77 If that would be the case then there would be a Ampur Muang for Lomsak.

All you guys got it exactly right but I may have to add that Phechabun is a little special compared to most other provinces which can make it a bit confusing....
Phetchabun city is a very small town with a population of only about 24,000 but Ampur Muang has a far bigger population then for sample Ampur Muang of Phitsanulok which has a population of about 100,000. This means that in Phechabun Ampur Muang is reaching far over the edges of downtown while in Phitsanulok or Chiag Mai and most other provincial capitals Ampur Muang is limited almost exactly to the town area and not stretching some 20 km into the suburbs like in Phetchabun.

I hope all this is understandable and makes sence

Updated provinces - have split it into regions as it was looking untidy. Surely there are some more members around - the east and southern areas look sparsely populated.

I am coming to live in LOS this summer. I really like your map. I would like
to find out about some of these places, ie cost of living, e-pat community,
cost of rent for condo/appartment. I don't know how to use wiki, if the
answers are there. Where do I go next. Sorry for the dumb question.

For general info about a province, just use a search engine, such as google. For more specific questions, we have many areas covered by our membership.

You could start threads in the "Regional and Local Forums" to get some input.

It is a simple technique that can be habitualised to merely turn the question upside down-
How many Provinces does TD NOT have covered?
