    $1m artwork damaged by cleaner

The cleaner had been told to keep at least 20cm away from the art

An art installation worth more than $1m (£624,000) has been damaged by an overzealous cleaner who tried to scrub away a deliberate patina.

The patina was meant to look like a puddle beneath a rubber trough placed under a stacked tower of wooden slats.

Artist Martin Kippenberger's When It Starts Dripping From the Ceiling remains on display in Dortmund's Ostwall Museum, where the damage occurred.

The work is on loan to the museum.

The private collector who owns the installation by Kippenberger - who died in 1997 - has agreed that it remain on display despite the incident.

Dortmund city spokesperson Dagmar Papajewski said it had not been decided whether the patina would be restored.

"It will be up to the collector to decide," Ms Papajewski told AP. "We can't consult Kippenberger about it

Bus crash in Hurghada, Egypt, kills 11 Hungarian tourists

The driver is believed to have lost control as he drove at high speed along a ring road leading to Hurghada's airport, the Mena news agency reported.

The crash also injured 27 Hungarian tourists, including four children.

Poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws are blamed for a high accident rate in Egypt.

The bus was carrying the tourists from their hotel to the airport when the accident happened, officials said.

Hurghada is located on the Red Sea coast, about 500km (300 miles) southeast of Cairo.

The accident took place on the first day of Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, when many Egyptians and tourists head to Red Sea resorts.

Police estimate road accidents kill about 6,000 people annually in the nation with a population of about 82 million.

Eight US tourists were killed in a bus crash last December near the southern city of Aswan.

Greeks agree coalition government without Papandreou

George Papandreou had already made clear his willingness to step aside

Greek leaders at crisis talks in Athens have agreed to form a new national unity government, the president's office says.

Beleaguered Prime Minister George Papandreou will step aside and his successor will be chosen on Monday, the statement said.

He and main opposition leader Antonis Samaras attended Sunday's talks, hosted by President Karolos Papoulias.

The announcement follows a week of turmoil over Greece's debt crisis.

Once the new leader has been named, the president will invite parties to join the new government, the statement said.

The plan envisages elections once an EU bailout package has been approved.
Mr Papandreou had been trying to build a national unity government to replace his Pasok party administration, but Mr Samaras, of the New Democracy party, had been refusing to negotiate unless his rival resigned first.

The two men also disagreed sharply on the timing of new elections, with Mr Papandreou seeking a delay of several months while Mr Samaras wanted them immediately.

IBF Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute of Romania punches Glen Johnson of Jamaica during their IBF Super Middleweight championship fight at the Colisee de Quebec in Quebec City, Nov. 5, 2011. Bute won the fight.

QUEBEC CITY - Montreal fighter Lucian Bute successfully defended his IBF super-middleweight title with a one-sided decision over Glen Johnson on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Bute improved to 30-0, winning all 12 rounds on two judges' cards and 11 of 12 on the other in front of a crowd of 15,306 at the Colisee.

"It was a great fight and a great performance for me," said Bute, born in Romania.

"Glen Johnson is a great fighter. To beat him, you have to avoid the jab. I did that and I tried to out-jab him. I have to be able to beat guys like him."

These pictures are incredible. For those of us who ride, we know it’s particularly amazing that nobody was seriously injured. I wonder how much the Simoncelli tribute might have been on everyone’s mind as the racers entered the first turn. I’ve always thought that riding a motorcycle is a little like swimming. It’s difficult to do if you think about the mechanics of it and are worried about the danger

'Carlos the Jackal' faces new French bomb attack trial

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez said recently he is in "combative mood"
the Jackal" has gone on trial in Paris over four bomb attacks in the early 1980s that killed 11 people.

"Carlos", a Venezuelan whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, is appearing before a panel of magistrates who will rule on the terrorism-related charges.
The 62-year-old is already serving a life sentence in France for the murder of two policemen in 1975.

He was captured by French special forces in Sudan in 1994.

By the time of his capture, he had earned global notoriety as a mastermind of fatal bomb attacks, assassinations and hostage-takings.

His most infamous act was leading a raid in Vienna in 1975, when his group took 11 ministers of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) hostage.

    Light 'promising' in cancer fight

By James Gallagher Health reporter, BBC News

    Can light cure cancer?

Light is a "promising" tool in the fight against cancer, say researchers in the US.
A study, published in Nature Medicine, showed how a drug could be created which sticks to tumours, but is then only activated when hit by specific waves of light.
It means a treatment can be highly targeted and not damage the surrounding tissue.

A cancer charity said the treatment showed early promise.

Currently, treatments for cancer can be separated into three categories: blasting it with radiation, surgically removing a tumour or using drugs to kill the cancerous cells. All have side effects and scientists are trying to come up with more precise therapies.

In this study, researchers at the National Cancer Institute, Maryland, used an antibody which targets proteins on the surface of cancerous cells.

They then attached a chemical, IR700, to the antibody. IR700 is activated when it is hit by near infrared light. This wavelength of light can penetrate several centimetres into the skin.
This potential treatment has promise” Laura McCallum Cancer Research UK
To test the antibody-chemical combination, researchers implanted tumours, squamous cell carinoma, into the backs of mice. They were given the drug and exposed to near infrared light.

Britain ranks below Peru in a new analysis by one of the world’s biggest fund managers of the risk to investors who buy government bonds. Norway, Sweden and Switzerland are the least risky bond issuers among 44 countries analysed in the BlackRock Sovereign Risk Index. At the other end of the scale, also in descending order, Egypt, Portugal and Greece are reckoned to be the most risky.
Britain falls near the middle of this new world order, ranking directly below Russia, China, Czech Republic, Israel and Peru. Some small comfort may be taken from the fact that gilts issued by the British Government are reckoned to be a better bet than bonds issued by France, the Philipines and Poland; which rank directly below Britain.
