A bid to arrest Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni for alleged war crimes was blocked by Britain's top prosecutor on Thursday in the first test of a new law that limits citizens' rights to seek the arrest of foreign politicians in the UK.

An unidentified person applied to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, on Tuesday for permission to apply to a court for an arrest warrant against Miss Livni for alleged war crimes linked to the 2008 Gaza offensive, the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement.

But the government ruled that Miss Livni was on a "special mission", which courts have ruled provides immunity from prosecution, and the application had therefore been turned down.

It appears that some people are held to be above the writ of the law

Instantly, using the "human mic" technique that the occupiers have developed to carry their voices, a thousand others chant it back to him, condemning the NYPD for "abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances".
