England fight back against Sri Lanka at Lord's

England recovered after a shaky start to enjoy marginally the better of an enthralling opening day to the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's, reaching 342-6 at the close.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, England skipper Andrew Strauss faced just 12 balls before he was trapped lbw for four, quickly followed back to the pavilion by Jonathan Trott and the out-of-form Kevin Pietersen to leave England in a perilous position at 22-3.

But a fourth-wicket stand of 108 between Ian Bell and Alastair Cook gradually swung the balance the home side's way.

And, after Cook had been removed four short of his 18th Test hundred, Eoin Morgan and Matt Prior made hay in the evening sun with a partnership of 101 - a record for England's sixth wicket against Sri Lanka.

Morgan's 128-ball 79 was particularly impressive, with the Middlesex man smashing two sixes off the spinners and looking assured against the seamers until he failed to get his bat on an inswinger from Suranga Lakmal (3-79) and was out leg-before.

That wicket, taken with the new ball half an hour before the close, was a fillip for Sri Lanka, but a quick-fire stand of 40 between Prior and Stuart Broad at the end of the day ensured Strauss will sleep easier than his opposite number Tillakaratne Dilshan.

French Open: Rafael Nadal outclasses Andy Murray to reach final

Five-time champion Rafael Nadal proved too strong for Andy Murray as he battled past the Briton in straight sets to reach the French Open final.

The Spaniard, celebrating his 25th birthday, refused to be blown off course by the gusting wind as he sealed a 6-4 7-5 6-4 victory on Court Philippe Chatrier, and he now awaits the winner of the second semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Nadal might well have lost his grip on the world number one ranking by Sunday's final, with Djokovic poised to replace him next week should he win his semi-final, but he will still have the huge incentive of potentially matching Bjorn Borg's record six French Open titles.

For Murray, a best-ever run at Roland Garros ended with a defeat that was widely predicted against a man who has now won 44 matches, and lost only one, in seven trips to the French Open.

Britain's 75-year wait for a Grand Slam singles champion to follow Fred Perry goes on, and Paris always seemed the least likely venue for Murray to make the breakthrough, but he had his chances to extend Nadal further than the three sets they played.

Nadal once saved 16 of 17 break points against Federer in a Roland Garros final and his powers of recovery were similarly evident as he saw off 15 of 18 against Murray, while taking six of 13 earned.

Inseparable twin friars die hours apart, age 92

Identical twin Franciscan friars who rarely left each other's side from their births 92 years ago have died within hours of each other.

Julian and Adrian Riester went to school together, travelled together and joined the Franciscan order together.

The Buffalo-born brothers both died of heart failure, said a fellow friar in Florida, where they had lived since moving from New York state in 2008.

They spent much of their lives at St Bonaventure University in New York.

"It really is almost a poetic ending to the remarkable story of their lives," said St Bonaventure spokesman Tom Missel.

"Stunning when you hear it, but hardly surprising given that they did almost everything together," Mr Missel was quoted as saying by Associated Press (AP).

At St Bonaventure, they worked as carpenters and gardeners, gaining a reputation as handymen who could fix anything.

They lived in separate rooms at the St Bonaventure Friary but had one telephone line that rang into both, a colleague at the friary told AP.

The twins, originally named Jerome and Irving, never said who was born first.

Upon joining the Franciscan order in their 20s, they took the names of saints.
"They had this intimate bond, in which neither was selfish at all," their cousin, Michael Riester, told the Buffalo News.

    Venezuela's housing crisis

New government-made housing project is seen from the top of Las Mayas slum with a view of the city of Caracas in the background May 26, 2011. Despite being in power for 12 years and bringing plenty of new schools and clinics to poor areas, Chavez has failed to fix Venezuela's housing shortfall -- currently at 2 million units. That, say critics, demonstrates the failure of socialism in Venezuela, where the 500,000 new homes built during Chavez's rule, about two-thirds by the private sector, is no better than the rate of construction under his predecessors. Not surprisingly, Chavez has sought to take the initiative with a new "Grand Housing Mission" -- his eighth such construction plan -- aiming to build 2 million new units by 2017 with funds available from higher global oil prices.
