A bad day. I was wrestling with posting this coz it is terribly upsetting and I wondered at the benefit in sharing it with this community.
I was driving a taxi tonight and was stopped at a set of traffic lights when I heard a scream of brakes and a very loud horn followed by a horrible bang. Before I could even look in the rear view mirror I saw a body fly past my windscreen and land only metres from where I sat. It was horrific.
There was an awful silence that seemed to continue for ages as I got out and ran to the poor victim who lay in an awful broken state on the median strip.
She was only young, maybe 15 or so, though it was hard to tell as her injuries were awful. I will never forget how it looked and I will not describe it as it would serve no purpose. I felt so helpless standing over the victim and time just seemed to stand still. The sequence of events that followed are still vague to me but I know that I managed to summon an ambulance with the two way radio in the taxi and lay a blanket over her as she lay there, her eyes just staring at me and blinking occasionally. I saw a fear in her eyes that is something that I shall never forget.
I kneeled beside her and held her hand and just kept saying stupid shit like 'you are gonna be alright darling' and 'help is coming' but she was unable to respond. I remember drawing her hair away from her face and stroking her forhead as I spoke. I felt so utterly helpless and all time seemed to have stopped.
It seemed ages before a police car came on the scene and pulled up blocking the scene from oncoming traffic that just seemed to keep whizzing by. The police woman that got out seemed to be very young and was quite content to allow me to continue comforting the gal while she went to the boot of her car and started getting out traffic cones and such.
I remember feeling so angry that she didnt help me.
An ambulance then arrived on the scene and I have to say that the paramedics were fantastic and I felt a tremendous relief ,as I was exhausted and they just took control.
The policewoman asked me to move the taxi out of the way so I did but I was still in some kind of weird limbo. She seemed so icy cold and I hated her.
I then returned, looking on feeling quite helpless as the paramedics worked on the poor gal. I was oblivious to everything else around me.

Moments later, although it could have been half an hour for all I know, the gal was loaded into the back of the ambo and driven away at speed with lights and siren blaring.
I gave my details to the police when they asked but was astounded that they didnt ask me anything more about what had happened. When they told me that I could go and suggested that I should take the rest of the night off I was indignant but returned to the taxi and drove back toward the city.
I had driven a couple of kilometres when I realized that my shirt was wet through and covered in blood. Somehow I had also ripped a hole in the leg of my trousers.
Suddenly, time and reality seemed to return all at once and I just pulled over and burst into tears. It all came flooding back but this time I was able to sequence the events.
Some time later and feeling very very beaten I drove on and regained control of my surroundings. I had been in shock I guess. I headed for a drive through bottlo and bought a bottle of Johhny Walker then headed straight for the resort.
I am now on the other side of half a bottle of scotch and am still shaking.
The taxi is still parked awkwardly outside my gaff and the daydriver can whistle coz I aint going anywhere now.
I am struck by the fact that I normally cant stand the sight of blood but somehow was able to rise to the enormity of helping this poor gal without any qualm what so ever. That bit I jst dont understand.

There is no moral to this. No proviso from which to learn. I guess I will learn of this poor gals fate tomorrow but I aint looking forward to it. Not one bit.

That was en excellent post Cap and I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that. I do hope the girl is OK, but it does sound like it will take her a while to recover from that.

Don't think too much, it is not always a mistake to move the head and you did a great job comforting her anyway.

Well done cap. You did everything right, right for her and right for you. I just feel dead set proud that you felt you could share it with us. Please let us know how she is as soon as you can.

agreed, and the shock thing is weird. It is just something we are not used to, so when it hits...

I hope she will be Ok.

I had a similar experience, although mine was about a guy that had slipped and fallen under a bus.

I was scared to cross the road for days, and did not sleep well. The shock thing was scary.

Anway, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience Cap.
    I have reported your post

    I'm hearing you on that.
No way I'm going anywhere today.
Just sent the wife 50 yards up the road for my supply of beer and cigarettes for the day.
    It is genuinely cold today.

Apropos nothing - I was down at the CM Night Bazaar last night to pickup some DVDs for a mate back home. King Kong was already out on display. Now, I saw this the other day at Central and thought it pretty spectacular; and every review I've read or seen praises it to high heaven......anyhow, the review on the front cover of this dodgy copy was, "Fairly Entertaining Remake - Idaho Sentinel"

Just read your post Capt - it must have been harrowing. I don't blame you for hitting the bottle - it doesn't give any answers, but it dulls some of the questions.

That post was so full of emotion Cap, it was moving. I'm glad you shared that with us, sometimes it is better to let things out of your system. If you hadn't of shared it with us then I guess you would of felt worse if not you would of eventually had to speak about it with someone. I'm sorry that you had to go through that but you did a great job of comforting the girl at that moment she needed someone there and I'm sure her parents will be pleased about that. Keep smiling you know I'm here to talk to Did you find the news on the girl?
    Welcome to the jungle!
