Daliah Lavi, 'Casino Royale' and 'The Silencers' Star, Dies at 74
9:46 AM PDT 5/4/2017 by Mike Barnes

After Kirk Douglas helped her get her start, she made the transition from European films and then became a German pop star.
Daliah Lavi, the exotic beauty who starred in the swinging 1960s spy spoofs Casino Royale and The Silencers, has died. She was 74.

Lavi died Wednesday at her home in Asheville, N.C., her family announced.

In The Silencers (1966), the first of the four Matt Helm movies that starred Dean Martin as the American superspy, Lavi played the femme-fatale Tina Batori; she saves the hero from getting a dagger in the back while he is in the embrace of a gorgeous female enemy agent.

The dark-haired, dark-eyed sex symbol then returned for another spy spoof, playing one of the "James Bonds," aka The Detainer, in Casino Royale (1967) opposite David Niven, Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress and Woody Allen.

Her other work in the comic genre included The Spy With a Cold Nose (1966), starring Lawrence Harvey, and Some Girls Do (1969).

At her 10th birthday party, Lavi met Kirk Douglas, who was filming The Juggler in her town in what is now Israel, and arranged for her to study ballet. A decade later, they worked together in Vincente Minnelli's Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), and she received a Golden Globe for most promising newcomer (female) for her work.

Lavi (that's her stage name; it means "lioness" in Hebrew) had appeared in such European fare as The Return of Dr. Mabuse (1961), The Demon (1963) and The Whip and the Body (1963) before attracting attention as The Girl in writer-director Richard Brooks' Lord Jim (1965), starring Peter O'Toole.

She played the pretentious actress Ilona Bergen in the Agatha Christie remake Ten Little Indians (1965) and also showed up rather nicely in Those Fantastic Flying Fools (1967), Nobody Runs Forever (1968), opposite Rod Taylor, and Catlow (1971), starring with Yul Brynner.

In the early 1970s, Lavi turned to singing and performed "Oh, wann kommst du?" (When Are You Coming?) and "Willst du mit mihr geh'n?" (Do You Want to Go With Me?), which became big pop hits in Germany. She reappeared as an actress on German television in the 1990s.

Fluent in five languages, Lavi lived in Asheville with her husband, Charles, since 1992.

Survivors also include her children Kathy, Rouben, Alexander and Stephen; grandchildren Sophie, Ben, Emma and Hannah and Levi; and sister Michal.

Her funeral and interment will take place in Israel, the family noted.

Don Gordon, Top-Notch Character Actor and Pal of Steve McQueen, Dies at 90
10:37 AM PDT 5/5/2017 by Mike Barnes

Don Gordon, the busy character who appeared opposite his buddy Steve McQueen in Bullitt, Papillon and The Towering Inferno, has died. He was 90.

A specialist in playing tough, hard-nosed characters, Gordon died April 24 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his wife of 37 years, Denise, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed with cancer just five days before his death, she said.

Gordon appeared in scores of TV episodes during his career, including two installments of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone: He portrayed a prize fighter in "The Four of Us Are Dying" in 1960 and was a thug who discovers he can trade his bad attributes for good ones in "The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross" in 1964.

Gordon received an Emmy nomination in 1963 for a one-shot dramatic role on The Defenders and three years later portrayed the sinister Richard Jensen, who menaced Lee Grant's Stella, on the second season of the primetime soap opera Peyton Place.

Gordon and McQueen were neighbors in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon, and McQueen used to drive past Gordon's home in his pickup truck. They soon became friends, and McQueen gave Gordon work on a 1959 episode of his CBS Western, Wanted: Dead or Alive.

Gordon then played the cop Delgetti, the partner to McQueen's detective character, in Bullitt (1968), the inmate Julot in Papillon (1973) and a fire captain in The Towering Inferno (1974).

McQueen had cancer and died of a heart attack after surgery to remove tumors in November 1980. He was 50.

"I think he enjoyed my company. I don't know," Gordon said in a 2005 interview. "And also, a lot of people would kiss up to him and everything. I didn't. He was just my friend, and I told the truth about whatever he asked about. … I never lied to him; he never lied to me."

Gordon spoke about his pal in the documentary Steve McQueen: The Essence of Cool (2005).

Born in Los Angeles on Nov. 13, 1926, Gordon made his first onscreen appearance in Twelve O'Clock High (1949), appeared with Dennis Hopper in The Last Movie (1971) and Out of the Blue (1980) and toiled in the early 1970s action flicks Fuzz, Slaughter and The Mack.

He also wrote the screenplay and starred as a cynical boxer in The Lollipop Cover (1965).

Gordon's well-stocked TV résumé includes work on Space Patrol, Climax!, 77 Sunset Strip, Johnny Staccato, The Blue Angels, The Outer Limits, The Untouchables, The F.B.I., Mannix, The Streets of San Francisco, Hart to Hart, T.J. Hooker, Remington Steele (as a character named Anthony Delgetti in a nod to Bullitt) and Diagnosis Murder.

In addition to his wife (she and Gordon were together for 45 years), survivors include his daughter Gabrielle.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to his favorite charity, the Lange Foundation, dedicated to animal rescue, care and placement.

RIP Michael Parks: Kill Bill actor dies aged 77

Yahoo Movies UK 10 May 2017

Born Harry Samuel Parks on 24 April 1940, Parks’ career as an actor and singer began with a role on TV’s ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ in 1958. He worked solidly in film and television throughout the 1960s, but his career suffered a setback after he was reportedly ‘blacklisted’ by the studios in the early 1970s, after criticising the moral content of his TV series ‘Then Came Bronson.’

Aside from a five-episode run on TV’s ‘Twin Peaks,’ Parks was largely stuck in low-budget exploitation throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. However, he gained a significant comeback role when Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino cast him as Texas Ranger Earl McGraw in 1997’s ‘From Dusk Till Dawn.’

Despite being killed off in the first scene, Tarantino and Rodriguez were sufficiently enamoured with Parks’ performance to bring Earl McGraw back, first in 2004’s ‘Kill Bill,’ then in 2007’s ‘Grindhouse.’ Parks also played a second role in ‘Kill Bill Vol 2,’ as well as appearing in Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained.’

This in turn led to Parks being cast by Kevin Smith in ‘Red State’ and ‘Tusk.’ Ben Affleck also cast him as iconic comics artist Jack Kirby in 2012 Oscar-winner ‘Argo.’

Truly a remarkable screen presence, Parks will be very sadly missed. We extend our deepest condolences to all who knew him.

Geoffrey Bayldon dead: Worzel Gummidge and Catweazel star dies aged 93
Children's television favourite was best known for playing Catweazel and Crowman

    Rachel Roberts 14 hours ago

Worzel Gummidge star Geoffrey Bayldon has died at the age of 93, his agency has announced.

Tributes have begun pouring in on Twitter for the popular actor who appeared in a number of the most popular television series of the 1960s and 1970s.

BBC presenter Lizo Mmzimba tweeted: “Sad news. Actor Geoffrey Bayldon, best known for playing Catweazel and Worzel Gummidge’s Crowman has passed away aged 93 his agency has said.”

The Leeds-born actor starred opposite the late John Pertwee who played the title role of the well-loved scarecrow in Worzel Gummidge, which ran from 1979-81.

The actor famously said no to the role of Dr Who twice. He was approached by the BBC to play the first doctor, but turned it down because he thought the character was too old for him to play and that the series went on for too long.

He turned them down again when they asked a second time because he wanted to play the part of Catweazle, which ran for two years from 1970.

After studying at the Hull College of Architecture, he began acting and trained at the renowned Old Vic Theatre School.

He had roles in several smash hit shows, including Z-Cars, The Avengers and The Tomorrow People.

As well as his television work, he starred in a number of films including Casino Royale, where he played Q in the work which was loosely based on Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel. Other moves included The Pink Panther Stars Again and big-screen versions of TV series Steptoe and Son and Porridge.

His most recent work before retirement was in the 2007 series of New Tricks and in the 2010 series of long-running sitcom My Family.

He is reported to have died peacefully at home after suffering from respiratory problems.

Curt Lowens, Holocaust Survivor and Wartime Hero Turned Actor, Dies at 91
1:22 PM PDT 5/11/2017 by Mike Barnes

Curt Lowens, a Holocaust survivor and World War II hero who came to Hollywood and portrayed German officers in such films as Tobruk and Torn Curtain and on television in Wonder Woman and Hogan's Heroes, has died. He was 91.

Lowens fell recently and died Monday night at a rehabilitation center of Beverly Hills, according to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. "Curt was a beloved member of our community," it said in a statement.

A native of East Prussia (later Poland) who was held in a concentration camp, Lowens worked for directors Alfred Hitchcock in Torn Curtain (1966) and Arthur Hiller in Tobruk (1967) and drew on his wartime experiences for his roles in Two Women (1960), Counterpoint (1967), The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969) and To Be or Not to Be (1983).

Auditioning for a part in The Hindenburg (1975), Lowens informed director Robert Wise that he had witnessed the German airship flying over Berlin as a child and was quickly hired.

Lowens also portrayed a Gestapo captain on Hogan's Heroes and an SS general on Wonder Woman and showed up on military-themed TV shows including 12 O'Clock High, Combat!, Mission: Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man and The A-Team.

Born Curt Loewenstein on Nov. 17, 1925, he and his family were living in Berlin when his synagogue was burned down during Kristallnacht in 1938 and his bar mitzvah postponed. Fleeing to England, they were rounded up in Holland and sent to a concentration camp.

After his family's release thanks to some fortuitous paperwork, the future actor took on the guise of a teacher named Ben Joosten, joined the Dutch Resistance and helped save 123 lives by delivering Jewish children (and a few adults) to families who hid them.

He went on to rescue two downed American airmen — receiving a commendation from Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower — and, while working as an interpreter with the British Eighth Corps, informed Hitler's successor, Karl Doenitz, that the war was over and the Germans had been defeated.

"My sanity turned around, the Gestapo knocking on doors," whereas by liberation, "I now knocked on doors,” he recalled in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Peter Flax last year.

In 1947, he came to the U.S. and studied to become an actor at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York. Taking the stage name Curt Lowens, he played an SS guard in the original Broadway production of Stalag 17, which debuted in 1951.

Lowens also portrayed Dr. Josef Mengele in the play The Deputy on the Great White Way, and his acting résumé also included The Mephisto Waltz (1971), The Other Side of Midnight (1977), Angels & Demons (2009) and a stint on General Hospital.

Lowens wrote a memoir, Destination: Questionmark, and most recently worked with high school students to create a six-minute animated film about his Holocaust experience called Curt Lowens: A Life of Changes.

In 2012, he contributed testimony to the Visual History Archive at the USC Shoah Foundation.

"Curt Lowens was a man who exemplified heroism at a time when heroes were in short supply," USC Shoah Foundation executive director Dr. Stephen D. Smith said in a statement. "He put himself at great risk to save others. By sharing his story, he has ensured that people will be inspired by his actions for generations to come."

Kathy, his wife of 48 years, died in December. They had no children.

Powers Boothe, Star of ‘Deadwood,’ Dies at 68

Kevin Fitzpatrick | an hour ago

A sad day for fans of Powers Boothe, as the revered character actor has apparently passed away. The sinister-voiced star was well-remembered for his role as one of Deadwood’s big bads, as well as appearances in everything from Sin City to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Word of Boothe’s passing spread over social media from actor Beau Bridges, though TVLine formally confirmed with his representative that Boothe passed away of natural causes in his sleep.

Boothe’s first major acting breakout came with an Emmy win for 1980 miniseries Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, with subsequent gigs taking him to HBO’s Philip Marlowe, Private Eye, and later his Deadwood role as Cyrus ‘Cy’ Tolliver. Boothe also appeared as Senator Roark in both Sin City films, along with villainous parts in 24, Nashville, and most recently, The Avengers and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Hydra turncoat Gideon Malick.

Boothe is now the second notable Deadwood star to pass away before HBO breaks ground on any kind of revival, but best wishes to those mourning his loss.

That's a real shame. I hope they forgot to give him the morphine for as long as possible.

Moors murderer Brady dies in jail aged 79 after illness

Moors Murderer Ian Brady died yesterday evening at the age of 79.
His death came just hours after he was urged to "do the right thing" and reveal where the last of his child victims is buried.

A Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust spokesman said: "We can confirm a 79-year-old patient in long term care at Ashworth High Secure Hospital has died after becoming physically unwell."

The serial killer, who used the name Ian Stewart-Brady before his death, was a patient at Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside where he was reportedly receiving palliative care.
At a court hearing in February lawyers said he had been bedridden for the last couple of years and it was "fair to say" he was terminally ill, with emphysema among his ailments.

Brady and Myra Hindley, who died in prison in 2002, tortured and murdered five children in the 1960s.
Four of the victims were buried on Saddleworth Moor in the south Pennines.

Brady was jailed for three murders in 1966 and had been at Ashworth since 1985.
He and Hindley later confessed to another two murders.

In 2013, he asked to be moved to a Scottish prison so he could not be force fed, as he could be in hospital, and where he could be allowed to die if he wished.
His request was rejected after Ashworth medical experts said he had chronic mental illness and needed continued care in hospital.

In February he was refused permission to launch a High Court fight to have the lawyer of his choice representing him at a tribunal where the decision would be reviewed.
Terry Kilbride, whose brother John (12) was also murdered by Brady, begged him to tell police where he dumped the body of Keith Bennett, who went missing aged 12 in 1964.

He told 'The Sun': "I would beg him to do the right thing on his deathbed and tell us where Keith is.
"Now is the time for him to stop playing tricks and come clean. If he takes it to the grave, I will feel so sorry for Keith's family.

"There will only ever be another search if there's fresh evidence. That has to come from him."
Mr Kilbride said he hopes the killer "rots in hell".

"We'll certainly celebrate his death when it comes. Good riddance," he said.

Even before his evil and sadistic crimes shocked and appalled Britain, Brady was a grim character.
As a young boy fascinated by horror movies, he was nicknamed Dracula by neighbours in Glasgow and later, locals who watched the young man slouch around the Hattersley Estate in Greater Manchester in his long trenchcoat dubbed him the Undertaker.

In May 1966 Brady, then 28, was convicted, along with lover Myra Hindley, of murdering 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey and 17-year-old Edward Evans.

Brady was also convicted of the murder of 12-year-old John Kilbride. He received three life sentences to run concurrently.
Brady escaped the hangman's noose as the death penalty was abolished just months earlier.

The evidence seen and heard at the Chester Assizes chilled the hearts of those who sat through the trial.

It included pictures of Lesley Ann Downey, naked, bound and gagged, and a tape recording of her begging for help and asking to be allowed home to her mother, as she was repeatedly tortured and sexually assaulted by Brady and Hindley before being murdered.
The little girl had fallen into the clutches of the sick pair on December 26, 1964, after they snatched her from a fairground.

They recorded her at their home in Wardle Brook Avenue, Hattersley and her cries reduced the judge, jury, spectators and even hardened police officers to tears.

Lesley Ann and John, who was murdered in November 1963, were later found buried in unmarked graves on the desolate Saddleworth Moors in Lancashire.
The evil lovers kept a trophy of the killings, with Hindley holding her pet dog and posing for pictures on the edge of John's grave.

The brutal murder of Edward Evans on October 7, 1965, finally led the police to the killers. Brady made the fatal mistake of involving a third person in the killings.

Hindley's brother-in-law David Smith was present when Brady hacked the homosexual teenager to death with an axe.
He asked Smith to help him carry the body upstairs but Smith was so horrified by the murder that he reported Brady to the police and he was arrested the following day.

Sir Roger Moore: James Bond star dies at the age of 89

James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has died at the age of 89, his children have announced.

Sir Roger starred seven times as 007, from 1973's Live And Let Die to 1985's A View To A Kill, in a hugely successful television and film career.

His children said they were "devastated" to confirm his death "with the heaviest of hearts" in a statement on Twitter.

Have you been living under a rock.
Superunknown was one of my favourite albums in the 90s. Listened to it a 1000 times but for some reason I had never heard of Chris Cornell either. I only knew the name of the band,

No that was Sean, however Roger does seem to have been a decent person in real life.
