Cuba 'Ladies in White' founder Laura Pollan dies

The leader of the influential Cuban protest group, Ladies in White, has died in the capital, Havana.

Laura Pollan, who was 63 years old, had been in hospital for a week suffering from Dengue fever.

She founded the group 10 years ago when her husband was jailed.

The group's members, dressed in white, gathered in central Havana at the weekends to demand freedom for a group of 75 men imprisoned during government repression in 2003.

After being hospitalised, Pollan developed severe respiratory problems.

Her daughter, Laura Labrada, said she had had a tracheotomy.

Band leader Edmundo Ros dies, 100

Edmundo Ros introduced Latin beats to UK audiences

Band leader Edmundo Ros, the man credited with popularising Latin American music in the UK, has died at the age of 100.

His death was confirmed by showbusiness charity the Grand Order of Water Rats.

Secretary John Adrian said: "He died last night peacefully at his home in Spain, two months short of his 101st birthday".

Ros received an OBE for services to entertainment in the New Year Honours of 2000

According to the Official Edmundo Ros Website, he was born in Trinidad in December 1910.

The family moved to Caracas, Venezuela, and he became the tympanist in the Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.

By 1937 he had moved to London to continue his classical studies, but instead became involved in popular music, forming his own five-piece Rumba Band in 1940 and making his first recording, for Parlophone, in 1941.

His performances at the Bagatelle Restaurant in London attracted the Royal Family and celebrities of the day, sealing his success.

The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, danced her first dance in public to his music. In later years he and his orchestra were often invited to play at Buckingham Palace.

In 1951 he bought the Coconut Grove and named it the Edmundo Ros Dinner and Supper Club. Only those mentioned in Who's Who were allowed club membership, the website claims.

The band grew and was renamed Edmundo Ros and his Orchestra, selling millions of records.

One of his most popular tunes was The Coffee Song, containing the lyric: "They've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil."

During the 1950s and 1960s the Ros orchestra appeared frequently on BBC Radio, but in 1975 he disbanded the orchestra, destroying most of its arrangement sheets.

Albums with his band and orchestra included Chocolate Whiskey & Vanilla Gin, and Broadway goes Latin and Hollywood Cha Cha Cha.

In his retirement, he lived with his wife Susan in Alicante, Spain.

"He was a major figure, one of the biggest names", Mr Adrian said.

"When you get to 100 you stop working. He retired in 1975, but between '39 and '75 he was a big, big name, had his own club in London and played around the world.

"His discography is massive. He was the one who really popularised Latin American music in this country."

Former DJ, TV presenter and charity fundraiser Sir Jimmy Savile has died, aged 84.
Savile, who was one of the most famous names on British TV and radio in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, died on Saturday.
Police said they were called to his home in Leeds, but that there was nothing suspicious about his death.
His family programme, Jim'll Fix It, drew in huge audiences and the programme received 20,000 letters a week at the height of its popularity.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers were called to the house in Roundhay at 12.10pm.
Details of how he died were not yet known, but he was recently in hospital with pneumonia.
Savile started out as a DJ on BBC Radio 1 and was the first host of Top of the Pops in 1964.
He also appeared on the music show's final edition in 2006.
His TV persona included chunky gold jewellery, a huge cigar, his trademark snowy white hair and a number of catch-phrases which were frequently parodied by impressionists such as Mike Yarwood.
Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Savile was conscripted as a Bevin Boy, working in the coal mines during the war.
But he was one of the country's first DJs in the 1950s and began his broadcasting career at Radio Luxembourg before moving to the BBC.
Off screen he did a lot of charity work, running 200 marathons and raising £40m over the years.
Savile was knighted by the Queen in 1990 for his charity work.

The "Duchess" thing was properly odd, thats for sure! He was certainly very eccentric in his private life. Hopefully not extending to weird stuff with kids.
Although he did raise millions for Great Almond Childrens Hospital, and many other charities in G.B.

Clearly you are both too dull to realise that the hospital is called Great Ormond Street not Great Almond Street. I have done my share for the hospital as have two of my friends, one of whom was in charge of the catering, the other the staff payroll.

An almond is a nut, just in case you are both too thick to know that.

"Gypo Home" Christ, it would put a Chelsea pad to shame. I was in his place a few years ago, and it was no gypo place then. A little dated maybe, but not a shithole. Also the guy was always up for helping out at charity events. He certainly helped raise the profile of an event that otherwise would have gone unnoticed. RIP Jim
