Richard Sherman, songwriter for Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, dies aged 95

Sherman and late brother Robert’s songs remain ‘quintessential lyrical voice of Walt Disney’, says company
Richard Sherman, one half of the prolific, award-winning pair of brothers who helped form millions of childhoods by penning the instantly memorable songs for Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – as well as the most-played tune on Earth, It’s a Small World (After All) – has died. He was 95.

Sherman, together with his late brother Robert, won two Academy Awards for Walt Disney’s 1964 smash Mary Poppins – best score and best song, Chim Chim Cher-ee. They also picked up a Grammy for best movie or TV score. Robert Sherman died in London at the age of 86 in 2012.

The Walt Disney Co. announced that Sherman died on Saturday in a Los Angeles hospital due to age-related illness. “Generations of moviegoers and theme park guests have been introduced to the world of Disney through the Sherman brothers’ magnificent and timeless songs. Even today, the duo’s work remains the quintessential lyrical voice of Walt Disney,” the company said in a remembrance posted on its website.


Their hundreds of credits as joint lyricist and composer also include the films Winnie the Pooh, The Slipper and the Rose, Snoopy Come Home, Charlotte’s Web and The Magic of Lassie. Their Broadway musicals included 1974’s Over Here! and stagings of Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the mid-2000s.

“Something good happens when we sit down together and work,” Richard Sherman told The Associated Press in a 2005 joint interview. “We’ve been doing it all our lives. Practically since college we’ve been working together.”
Their awards include 23 gold and platinum albums and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They became the only Americans ever to win first prize at the Moscow film festival for Tom Sawyer in 1973 and were inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2005.

President George W Bush awarded them the National Medal of Arts in 2008, commended for music that “has helped bring joy to millions”.

Most of the songs the Shermans wrote – in addition to being catchy and playful – work on multiple levels for different ages, something they learned from Disney.
“He once told us, early on in our career, ‘Don’t insult the kid – don’t write down to the kid. And don’t write just for the adult.’ So we write for grandpa and the 4-year-old – and everyone in between – and all see it on a different level,” Richard Sherman said.

The Shermans began a decade-long partnership with Disney during the 1960s after having written hit pop songs like Tall Paul for ex-Mouseketeer Annette Funicello and You’re Sixteen, later recorded by Ringo Starr.

They wrote over 150 songs at Disney, including the soundtracks for such films as The Sword and the Stone, The Parent Trap, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Jungle Book, The Aristocrats and The Tigger Movie.

It’s a Small World – which accompanies visitors to Disney theme parks’ boat ride sung by animatronic dolls representing world cultures – is believed to be the most performed composition in the world. It was first debuted at the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair pavilion ride

The two brothers credited their father, composer Al Sherman, with challenging them to write songs and for their love of wordsmithing. His legacy of songs includes You Gotta Be a Football Hero, (What Do We Do On a) Dew-Dew-Dewy Day and On the Beach at Bali-Bali. His sons went on to popularize the terms “fantasmagorical” and “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.

The Shermans teased songs out of each other, brainstorming titles and then trying to top each other with improvements. “Being brothers, we sort of short-cut each other,” Richard Sherman said. “We can almost look at each other and know, ‘Hey, you’re on to something, kiddo.’”

Away from the piano, the two raised families and pursued their own interests, yet still lived close to each other in Beverly Hills and continued working well into their 70s. When Chitty Chitty Bang Bang came to Broadway in 2005, they added new lyrics and four new songs.

Richard Sherman is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children: Gregory and Victoria. He also is survived by a daughter, Lynda, from a previous marriage.
A private funeral will be held on Friday; Disney said a celebration of life service will be announced later.

Though they were estranged for a number of years, the brothers largely avoided sibling rivalry. When asked about that, Richard Sherman was philosophical, touching and jokey all at the same time – much like the trunkful of songs he wrote with his brother.

“We’re human. We have frailties and weaknesses. But we love each other very much, respect each other,” he said. “I’m happy that he’s a successful guy. That makes me a successful guy.”

Doug Ingle, frontman of rock band Iron Butterfly, dies aged 78

Doug Ingle, the frontman and organist of US rock band Iron Butterfly who wrote their major hit In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida, has died aged 78.

His son Doug Ingle Jr announced the news on social media, writing: “Thank you Dad for being a father, teacher and friend. Cherished loving memories I will carry the rest of my days moving forward in this journey of life.”
Born in Nebraska, Ingle was raised in San Diego where he formed Iron Butterfly in 1966 and signed to Atlantic Records, who released their debut album Heavy in 1968. Later that year came In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida, its title a garbled version of “in the garden of Eden” as uttered by an inebriated Ingle, who had written it while drinking a gallon of wine.

The full 17-minute version of the song occupied the second half of the album of the same name, which spent 140 weeks in the US album chart and sold more than four million copies. A three-minute radio edit also reached No 30 in the singles chart.
Ingle was on board for two further studio albums, with 1969’s Ball their highest charting LP at No 3 in the US. He left in 1971, precipitating the group’s split.

Having made millions with the band and bought a 600-acre ranch among other properties, Ingle later admitted: “I didn’t involve myself at the business level at all”, and found himself in debt to the US Inland Revenue Service. He managed a park for recreational vehicles in Los Angeles during the mid-1970s, but returned to Iron Butterfly for various tours until a final spell with the group in the mid-1990s.

In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida became an enduring hit and pop-cultural reference point, appearing in the Simpsons and inspiring cover versions by artists as varied as Slayer, the Residents, High Contrast and Boney M.

Ingle was the last surviving member of the classic Iron Butterfly lineup, after the deaths of drummer Ron Bushy, bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Eric Brann between 2003 and 2021.

Albert S. Ruddy, a colorful, Canadian-born producer and writer who won Oscars for “The Godfather” and “Million Dollar Baby,” developed the raucous prison-sports comedy “The Longest Yard” and helped create the hit sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes,” has died at age 94.



Ruddy died “peacefully” Saturday at the UCLA Medical Center, according to a spokesperson, who added that among his final words were, “The game is over, but we won the game.”
Tall and muscular, with a raspy voice and a city kid’s swagger, Ruddy produced more than 30 movies and was on hand for the very top and very bottom, from the “Godfather” and “Million Dollar Baby” to “Cannonball Run II” and “Megaforce,” nominees for Golden Raspberry awards for worst movie of the year.
Otherwise, he had a mix of successes such as “The Longest Yard,” which he produced and created the story for, and such flops as the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller “Sabotage.” He worked often with Burt Reynolds, starting with “The Longest Yard” and continuing with two “Cannonball Run” comedies and “Cloud Nine.” Besides “Hogan’s Heroes,” his television credits include the movies “Married to a Stranger” and “Running Mates.”
Nothing looks better on your resume than “The Godfather,” but producing it endangered Ruddy’s job, reputation and his very life. Frank Sinatra and other Italian Americans were infuriated by the project, which they feared would harden stereotypes of Italians as criminals, and real-life mobsters let Ruddy know he was being watched. One night he heard gunfire outside his home and the sound of his car’s windows being shot out.
On his dashboard was a warning that he should close the production, immediately.
Ruddy saved himself, and the film, through diplomacy; he met with crime boss Joseph Colombo and a couple of henchmen to discuss the script.
“Joe sits opposite me, one guy’s on the couch, and one guy’s sitting in the window,” Ruddy told Vanity Fair in 2009. “He puts on his little Ben Franklin glasses, looks at it (the script) for about two minutes. What does this mean “fade in?” he asked.”’ Ruddy agreed to remove a single, gratuitous mention of the word “mafia” and to make a donation to the Italian American Civil Rights League. Colombo was so pleased that he urged Ruddy to appear with him at a press conference announcing his approval of the movie, a gathering that led to Ruddy’s being photographed alongside members of organized crime.
With the stock of parent company Gulf & Western dropping fast, Paramount fired Ruddy, only to have director Francis Coppola object and get him rehired. In the end, mobsters were cast as extras and openly consulted with cast members. Ruddy himself made a cameo as a Hollywood studio guard.
“It was like one happy family,” Ruddy told Vanity Fair. “All these guys loved the underworld characters, and obviously the underworld guys loved Hollywood.”
With a cast including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert Duvall, “The Godfather” was a critical and commercial sensation and remains among the most beloved and quoted movies in history. When Ruddy was named winner of the best picture Oscar at the 1973 ceremony, the presenter was Clint Eastwood, with whom he would produce “Million Dollar Baby,” the best picture winner in 2005. Upon the 50th anniversary of “The Godfather,” in 2022, Ruddy himself became a character. Miles Teller played him in “The Offer,” a Paramount+ miniseries about the making of the movie, based on Ruddy’s experiences.
“Al Ruddy was absolutely beautiful to me the whole time on `The Godfather’; even when they didn’t want me, he wanted me,” Pacino said in a statement. “He gave me the gift of encouragement when I needed it most and I’ll never forget it.”
Ruddy was married to Wanda McDaniel, a sales executive and liaison for Giorgio Armani who helped make the brand omnipresent in Hollywood, whether in movies or at promotional events. They had two children.
Born in Montreal in 1930, Albert Stotland Ruddy moved to the U.S. as a child and was raised in New York City. After graduating from the University of Southern California, he was working as an architect when he met TV actor Bernard Fein in the early 1960s. Ruddy had tired of his career, and he and Fein decided to develop a TV series, even though neither had done any writing.
Their original idea was a comedy set in an American prison, but they soon changed their minds.
“We read in the paper that ... (a) network was doing a sitcom set in an Italian prisoner of war camp and we thought, ‘Perfect,”’ Ruddy later explained. “We rewrote our script and set it in a German POW camp in about two days.”
Starring Bob Crane as the wily Col. Hogan, “Hogan’s Heroes” ran from 1965-71 on CBS but was criticized for trivializing World War II and turning the Nazis into lovable cartoons. Ruddy remembered network head William Paley calling the show’s concept “reprehensible,” but softening after Ruddy “literally acted out an episode,” complete with barking dogs and other sound effects.
While Fein continued with “Hogan’s Heroes,” Ruddy turned to film, overseeing the low-budget “Wild Seed” for Brando’s production company. His reputation for managing costs proved most useful when Paramount Pictures head Robert Evans acquired rights to Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel “The Godfather” and sought a producer for what was supposed to be a minor, profit-taking gangster film.
“I got a call on a Sunday. ‘Do you want to do The Godfather?”’ Ruddy told Vanity Fair. “I thought they were kidding me, right? I said, ‘Yes, of course, I love that book’ – which I had never read.”

Herbert Elfring, survivor of attack on Pearl Harbor, dies at 102

Pearl Harbor attack survivor Herbert Elfring has died at the age of 102.

The U.S. Army veteran enlisted as a private in 1940 and was just 19 years old on the day of the attack.

He was stationed at Camp Malokole, about 3 miles from Pearl Harbor, when Japanese planes flew in. He just missed a line of bullets.

Elfring was one of five survivors who attended the Dec. 7 commemoration last year.

I remember watching a documentary about this. The police were next to fucking useless, and no-one really gave a shit because he kidnapped desperate hookers off the streets.

If I recall correctly he tortured his victims in some horrible BDSM setup in a barn. Then, as the article says, killed them and fed them to his pigs.

Didn't get to die of natural causes, I hope he suffered a painful death.

Tin Oo, Myanmar activist and Suu Kyi confidante, dies

Tin Oo, a Myanmar general turned democracy activist and founding member of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, died on Saturday aged 97, an aide and local media said.


Tin Oo rose to serve as commander of the army under former strongman Ne Win, before being forced out for allegedly withholding information over a failed coup plot.


He co-founded the pro-democracy NLD in the aftermath of mass protests against a former junta in 1988, and went on to become one of Suu Kyi’s closest confidantes.


He died Saturday morning at a hospital in Yangon where he had been undergoing treatment for health issues, one of his personal security officers told AFP on condition of anonymity.


Local media also quoted his son as saying he had died Saturday morning, but did not give a cause of death.


Tin Oo was detained by the military for more than a decade in the crackdown that followed the 1988 protests.


He was arrested again along with Suu Kyi in 2003 after a pro-junta mob attacked their motorcade, killing dozens of people.


In 2017, the NLD stalwart suffered a stroke and in recent years receded from the political arena due to old age and poor health.


The NLD has been targeted in the junta’s bloody crackdown on dissent following its 2021 coup, with one former lawmaker executed in Myanmar’s first use of capital punishment in decades.


The junta dissolved the party in 2023 for failing to re-register under a tough new military-drafted electoral law, removing it from polls it has indicated it may hold in 2025.

Natasha Ryan, the teenager who famously hid in her boyfriend’s cupboard, leading her family and police to believe she had been murdered, has died in Rockhampton in central Queensland.

Ryan was at the centre of one of Australia’s most notorious missing persons cases after she disappeared, aged just 14, in August 1998.

She went into hiding at the north Rockhampton home of her boyfriend Scott Black and was not heard from for more than five years.

Her disappearance came about the time of a number of well-publicised disappearances of women and girls in Rockhampton, who were later found to have been victims of serial killer Leonard John Fraser.

Ryan’s family were so sure of her death that, three years after she disappeared, her father Robert held a special memorial service in Bundaberg Crematorium Chapel to give the family “closure”.

Fraser was charged with Ryan’s murder.

However, on the ninth day of his murder trial in April 2003, a tip-off led to a police raid on Black’s home and Ryan was found, alive and well, hiding in a cupboard.

Her spectacular reappearance in the middle of the murder trial made international headlines.

Black, seven years Ryan’s senior, was eventually jailed for a year on a perjury charge because, during Fraser’s trial, he testified that he had not seen Ryan since she disappeared.

Ryan and Black married in 2008 surrounded by their family and friends and had four children.

Soon after she was found in 2003, Ryan appeared on Nine’s 60 Minutes program. She insisted Black did not hold her against her will and said that he tried on several occasions to get her to call home.

“I remember exactly when I left home,” Ryan said.

“I was only 14, but Mum was always nagging about Scott and me. I felt I needed to get away for a little while.”

She left the house, which was five minutes from her mother’s home, only six times to go to the beach at night, and battled a bout of food poisoning when she was learning how to cook.

She later told the now-defunct British tabloid News of the World that she wore men’s clothes, watched the hunt for her body on TV and took out her frustrations on a punching bag during her time in hiding.

Ryan said she had also learnt yoga positions to hide comfortably in Black’s cupboard when he had visitors.

“Every time someone came around to Scott’s house, as they did a lot in the early days, I hid,” Ryan said.

“In the clothes cupboard there was room for me to stand up if I bent my head ... but I sat in a yoga position because it was comfortable.”

She told police that one of the reasons she stayed in hiding was because the lie had become too big.

Ryan was found dead at Rockhampton Golf Club on Sunday morning by police who were responding to a call for a welfare check.

The 40-year-old’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Asked about Ryan’s death at a press conference this morning, Queensland Premier Steven Miles said it was a tragic story.
“My sympathies go to her family and loved ones,” he said.

Black Lace star Colin Gibb dies day after retiring, aged 70

Eurovision and Black Lace star Colin Gibb has died aged 70. His wife Sue Kelly shared the news with fans. The singer announced that her 'dearest husband' died on Sunday afternoon, just days after revealing his retirement.
She said: "I love you Colin, spent 22 years living your Agadoo dream, we were due to retire to Spain on Thursday, you were so happy, so looking forward to our new life, now you're gone.
"As we used to say, always love you forever." His Black Lace bandmate Dene Michael also paid tribute to the star and wrote: "So sad to hear the passing of my singing partner with Black Lace RIP my friend Colin Gibb. God Bless. We had some great times together touring the world."
The band's official Facebook page posted: "It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our great friend Colin Gibb. Colin was one of the founder members of Black Lace, together with Alan Barton, and will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.

"We’d like to send his family and friends all our love and support at this extremely difficult time." Just days before his death, the musician announced his retirement, telling fans: "All good things must come to an end." On May 13, he said he was playing one final show that week before retirement.
He wrote: "Well all good things must come to an end. I have decided to retire. My last show will be on Thursday at Villa Adeje Beach Hotel, in San Eugeneo. Thanks to all of you that have supported "Black Lace" over the years, and the thousands of friends I have met during that time since we set out in 1975."


Black Lace finished seventh for the UK at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest with their song, Mary Ann. They also released hit songs like Superman, Hokey Cokey, Wig-Wam Bam and I Am The Music Man. Their song Agadoo was their biggest success, with the track hitting the number two spot in the music charts in the country.

EastEnders' Nicholas Ball has died aged 78, his agent said




Nicholas Ball, known for playing Terry Bates in BBC’s EastEnders, has died aged 78, his agent has announced.


The star played the gang lord Terry Bates in the popular soap opera, who attacked Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) while smashing up the Queen Victoria pub.


He also took on the role of the chairman of the club and ex-rock star Garry Ryan in the drama Footballers’ Wives.


In a statement, Ball’s agent said he “passed away following a short illness” and that his “successful acting career on stage and screen spanned an impressive six decades”.


Ball also played the lead in private detective show Hazell as the main character, James “Jim” Hazell, who is a cockney former policeman originally created by Gordon Williams and footballer Terry Venables, who wrote books under the name PB Yuill.


He also appeared in episodes of crime shows Jonathan Creek, Hustle, Heartbeat and Bergerac along with comedies Red Dwarf and The Young Ones and drama The Crezz.


He also had roles in small and big screen films including war drama Overlord, thriller Rogue Male, crime drama The Krays: Dead Man Walking and Jilly Cooper's adaptation The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.




Ball recently filmed the 2024 rural-set drama The Kingdom By The Sea, opposite Coronation Street actress Rula Lenska.


Ball is survived by his widow Ayda.


He was previously married to comedian Sir Billy Connolly’s second wife, the comedy actress turned therapist Pamela Stephenson after they met on the set of Not The Nine O’Clock News.

Tom Bower has died at the age of 86.


The actor, best known for his roles in Die Hard 2 — in which he starred as janitor Marvin alongside Bruce Willis in the leading role — and in the historical drama The Waltons, died in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles on May 30, his sister-in-law, Mary Miller, confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter.


No cause of death has been announced yet for the star, who is survived by his brother, Bobby, children Viv and Rob, and grandchildren Nicole, Jonathan, Lucille, and Henry.


According to his sister-in-law, Tom had been a big supporter of the SAG-AFTRA strike, when thousands in the industry took to the picket line this year as they fought for fairer earnings amid the rise of streaming platforms.


She said: “He believed that all actors and all people should be represented in a way that was decent.”


The Light of My Life star was married to the German-born Ursula — who spent 40 years working for a law company in LA — from 1972 until her death in August at the age of 1970.


Miller said Tom and Ursula had “never spent a day apart” since they tied the knot.


Elsewhere in his career, Tom was cast in supporting roles in films such as The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Undoing, and hit political series The West Wing.


His last appearance was a guest role on comedy-drama series Lucky Hank as Henry Devereaux snr last year, and shortly before that he starred in the Netflix horror-comedy film We Have a Ghost alongside David Harbour and Jennifer Coolidge.

A search is under way after Dr Michael Mosley, best known for appearing on TV shows, went missing on a Greek island.
An appeal was shared in a local Facebook group after the 67-year-old vanished in Symi, a small island opposite Rhodes, on Wednesday.

Dr Mosley is known for appearing on television programmes like This Morning and The One Show. He also hosts the Just One Thing health podcast for the BBC.
He is also credited for the rising popularity of the 5:2 diet for losing weight, which involves fasting for two days per week.
Local police said the search was being "carried out by the fire brigade with the assistance of forces of the Hellenic Police, Civil Protection (a local and regional coordination agency), volunteers and a police dog, while technical means such as drones are also used to locate the missing person".

A body has been found in a cave on the Greek island of Symi in the search for UK television doctor Michael Mosley.
The TV personality was last seen by friends at the Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday, before going for a walk.
Volunteers and emergency workers were searching a treacherous mountainous part of the island yesterday after the 67-year-old TV personality disappeared last week.
Emergency crews called off the search yesterday evening as night fell due to the area they have been searching being too dangerous to explore at night, but they resumed the search this morning.
The search effort has been widespread and has included firefighters, dogs, helicopters, drones, local people and officers from Symi and outside the island.
Dr Mosley, known for popularising the 5:2 diet and for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning, was on holiday when he disappeared.

Iconic French singer Françoise Hardy dies aged 80

One of France's best-loved singer-songwriters, Françoise Hardy, has died at the age of 80.
"Mum is gone," her son, Thomas Dutronc, who is also a musician, wrote on social media.

Hardy burst on to the music scene in 1962 and became a cultural icon who inspired the likes of Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan. Known for her melancholy ballads, she symbolised France's Yé-yé (yeah yeah) pop movement, so-called because of its nod to English music.

Her most famous songs included All the Girls and Boys (Tous les garçons et les filles), It Hurts to Say Goodbye (Comment te dire adieu) and My Friend the Rose (Mon amie la rose).
Her biggest UK hit was All Over The World, an English-language version of her song Dans le monde entier, which reached number 16 in the charts in June 1965.
Hardy was born in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1944 and raised by her mother.

Like many girls at the time, she grew up listening to Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and other American and British stars on Radio Luxembourg and she signed her first record deal at just 17.
Her breakout as a musician came in 1962 with the simple, plaintive song, Tous les garçons et les filles, when she sang of all the boys and girls walking hand in hand, while "I walk alone through the streets, my heart aching". It was an instant hit in France and even broke through in the UK charts.

Her style captivated fashion designers, becoming a model for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne, who designed a minidress out of gold plates for her.
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger once famously called her the "ideal woman", while fellow singer-songwriter Bob Dylan penned several love letters to her.

One of her most memorable performances came in 1968 with Comment te dire adieu, a French adaptation by Serge Gainsbourg of a song originally in English. But the Gainsbourg song has since been covered many times, with its painful goodbye to a man with a "heart of pyrex".

She collaborated with a number of artists, including Blur and Iggy Pop.
Hardy was also an actor - appearing in films by directors including Jean-Luc Godard, Roger Vadim and John Frankenheimer - as well as a writer of fiction and non-fiction.
Among the topics she wrote about was astrology, which she developed a love for during the 1970s.

She was married once, to the singer Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had her son Thomas. They separated in the late 1980s, but she would often refer to her ex-husband as the love of her life.
Hardy had been ill for some time before her death, revealing in 2004 that she had been diagnosed with lymphoma.
In 2015, she was placed in an induced coma for weeks following a fall and in 2021, she said she had cancer in one of her ears and felt "close to the end" of her life.

Her career spanned more than five decades, during which she released nearly 30 albums. Hardy's last album, Personne D'Autre (Nobody Else), was released in 2018.
Rolling Stone ranked her at number 162 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2023.
Among those to pay tribute to Hardy following news of her death was France's Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, who wrote on social media: "How to say goodbye to her? Eternal Françoise Hardy, legend of French song, who entered, through her sensitivity and her melodies, into the heart of an entire country."

Mark James, Songwriter of ‘Suspicious Minds,’ ‘Always on My Mind’ and ‘Hooked on a Feeling,’ Dies at 83



Mark James, a Songwriters Hall of Fame member who wrote or co-wrote “Suspicious Minds,” “Always on My Mind” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” died June 8 at his home in Nashville. The news was reported by his hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle.
James was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. BMI named him one of its Songwriters of the Century in 2000, citing all three of the aforementioned tunes as being on a list of the 100 greatest songs of the 20th century.
James won two Grammys, both in 1983 for “Always on My Mind,” which he shared with co-writers Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher. It won both song of the year and country song of the year after being recorded by Willie Nelson, who took it to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the country songs chart. It was previously recorded by — and is often associated with — Elvis Presley, although his 1972 version was not a major hit at the time in the U.S., having been issued as an Elvis B-side. A cover version by the Pet Shop Boys was arguably as big internationally as Nelson’s, reaching No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 4 in the U.S. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
