Incredible if real (and it looks real):

I discovered many moons ago that if you start with a cube that is sorted, and then do the same pattern of moves, (whatever the pattern) over and over it will come back to being sorted.

Cheating? yes but sure looks impressive.

This thread is about the pictures. Not about how many people look at the pictures. This thread's so called "status' will have no bearing on the future quality of the pictures. Quite the opposite. If more viewers are attracted their will be numpties posting drivel they took not because it is actually amazing but because they wish to self promote. Which is why you don't see pictures from me because I am a crap photographer.

Everest north face. Can you spot the people in the photo?

Link to original size photo, which should make spotting the people easier:

Ama Dablam on the trek down from Everest. Note the village in the lower right of the photo.

Link to original large size image which is much clearer and truly awesome:

Even when the original photo is zoomed, it is a bit difficult to make out exactly how many people there are. It looks like there may be 3 and possibly a yak to the right of them for carrying their supplies.

Comparing the size of the people to the overall photo helps to realize the immense size of the mountain.

Surely that's not the whole mountain taken from the bottom?

I'd say that pic makes it look rather small if that's the case.

    Fuck it, sign me up.

Using the coordinates from the original photo and Google Earth, the elevation the photographer took the photo from was 16,879 feet. With Everest being 29,029 feet, you are seeing only the top 12,150 feet of the mountain in the photo.

    Base Camp maybe?

There appears to be a building about 45 degrees up and left of the walkers.

    Last chance saloon?

Yes, that could be the base camp for the north face. The file name of the original photo is "Everest North Face toward Base Camp Tibet".

Here's a link to the page that gives all the details about the photo and the coordinates. It also has a link that will take you to the location of the photo in Google Earth.

How about Moraine Lake not far away?

Yes the water is turquoise. The colour being caused by the rock sediment from the glacier.

Here's another on the Parkway. Bow Lake

Need more surf for Icefields Parkway.

Carrying on with the train theme:

Real-Life Thomas the Tank Engine Spotted in Japan

A life-sized Thomas the Tank Engine was spotted in the mountains of Japan, west of Tokyo and near the city of Shimada in Shizuoka prefecture. The steam engine replica belongs to the Oigawa Railway.

The company is famous for its old-fashioned steam locomotives which carry passengers through isolated spots in the surrounding area, populated by mountains and hills, to one of the many hot spring resorts.

Thomas will be making journeys throughout the month of July. Unfortunately tickets have already sold out but may be available through secondary marketplaces. People can still catch a glimpse of Thomas by visiting sections along the Oigawa Railway in July.

How about if I told you this is not a photograph?

The image you see above is not a photograph. It is actually a finger painting by Kyle Lambert using the Procreate app on an iPad Air. The mind-blowing portrait of actor Morgan Freeman (original photo by Scott Gries) is made up of approximately 285,000 brush strokes and took over 200 hours to complete. The entire process was captured as a time-lapse video by Procreate, allowing you to watch 200 hours of painting in 3 minutes (embedded below).

Kyle Lambert is a UK-based visual artist that specializes in the creation of visually striking paintings and illustrations for film, television, advertising and print. Although trained as a traditional oil painter/illustrator, Kyle has become a champion for digital art. On his description page, Lambert remarks:

“One of the big reasons I decided to do this painting was to inspire other budding artists to embrace digital art. A friend of mine who is a school teacher explained to me recently that whenever he plays one of my painting videos in class, his students become noticeably more engaged and excited about creating art. The idea that more people are engaging in art because of something that I have created is amazing to me.”
