Stinky I understand your frustration 20 odd years ago I was a LEA appointed school governor and can recall then that excellence and achievement was something that was looked down upon.

Yes bankao that attitude seems to still be alive and kicking but I don't think in all schools, some are consigned to the trash heap where academic standards are kept to a minimum whilest others seem to do very well with more emphasis on achievement, I think this is what's called the post code lottery.

There is a brand new Labour government built Primary school about 300m from where my kids live. It was failing before, so Labour knocked it down and rebuilt it. It's still failing because the same teachers work there and the same chav families send their kids there. They can watch their kids walk to school and don't have to miss daytime TV, or get out of bed to take their kids to school.
Across a busy dual carriageway, about a mile away is an older red brick CofE Primary. The Headmistress is like Miss Marple, all tweed and brogues. She has quite high standards and is rarely crossed by kids or parents. Despite both being atheists we signed the kids up there and they have done well, getting into a first choice comprehensive over the border in the next county.
It was the kids first choice as well as ours, after they had rejected all the sink estate comps nearby. We have to bear the costs of bussing them in plus all the extra curricular stuff they do, but it really is worth it when you see the progress they are making.
There are good schools out there, it's just hard work finding them. Bush telegraph at the CofE primary did it for us.

Ugh . . . one more day here in Kuantan, working.

Not the most interesting place and the haze from Indonesia is getting worse.

Sun-Fri just seems a tad too long - I want to go home

Last day today and then home for the week-end . . . and then off again for a week.

    Sigh

(Indon-induced haze is terrible - schools still not open)

    There ya go.

My point of view is the same as both of youse. Plus, you have the cops who have to eventually clean this type of shit up, and much worse, every day, all over the world. IMNSFHO, you'll find a lot more sympathetic and empathetic policemen than callus MF'rs then you would expect, due to this lousy service they perform for us. They're even more amazing when you think of the other part of the policeman's motto (from the LAPD's): To Serve and Protect
“The Master said, At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. At seventy, I could follow the dictates of my own heart; for what I desired no longer overstepped the boundaries of right.”

Could be worse. You might have a hangover.

For me, rainy holidays at the beach have a certain beautiful, wistful ambiance. And if the sun comes out, even briefly, it can be an amazing experience, to be savoured then and later.

The selfish cretins across the road are at it again. Here in Brisbane, Oztrailia, today is a public holiday (meaning everyone is more likely to be at home) and these idiots are using a chainsaw to cut down trees in their yard.
They've been renovating for months, which has meant electric saws, planers and grinders. During the week it is socially acceptable ( though irritating on various afternoons I've had at home ), but they often do it on weekends too. Morons.....

Ditto. The chinks seem a bit better behaved imo.

Me MiL has just returned from a stay outside of Thailand. She's comeback haggard looking and has lost weight. I told my missus to get her to go to the docs over a week ago. Yesterday she went to see the village magic man who told her she was dying. Today she's running around making a boxed offering to the ghosts.
Tomorrow she'll go to the doctors for sure. The missus is taking her. If the doctor tells her she's alright, no problem, then the boxed offering to the ghosts worked. If the doctor tells her she has a problem then the boxed offering hasn't worked yet.

LD, half the posters here don't know the difference between plural and possessive, so don't be too harsh on your lady . . .

    ^ that's a triple plural - impressive!

(child is plural, originally, so children is one of these historical errors; a double plural)

So much for the magic man telling her she's dying. She has GERD.

4 Southern Hemisphere sides left contesting the world cup and now for endless whinging from our Northern Hemisphere cousins.

I wish they would learn to play Rugby.
