    Getting a UK passport

The company I work for has alot of work in the UK and were asking around who had a UK passport, I didnt think much of it.
Anyway it turns out that it might be possible for me to get a UK passport, Dual Ozzie as my grandfather was from Scotland and my grandmother from england.
Anyone have any idea where to start ? and will it be possible to do it in Thailand ?
    Thanks

If you are a UK passport holder, working in the UK you would be paying taxes at around 50%.
Sure there will be ways around it, but difficult, thats why I havn't worked there for the past 30 years...

Easiest way is to paint your face black, say you're a poof and promise to NEVER get a job, has worked for millions.

To be eligible for a British passport, you must have a British born parent. People get confused with the Irish rules which allow people with an Irish born Grandparent to claim citizenship. So no, you are not entilted to a British passport.

You are however eligible for an Ancestry visa. This is a five year visa available to Commonwealth citizens who have a British born grandparent (or Irish born grandparent if born before March1922).

This visa allows you to live and work in the UK without having to meet the stringent criteria for a normal work visa (minimum masters degree or a bachelors and sponsoring employer, etc). After five years working continuously in the UK, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) and once you have held ILR for a year, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship.

We`ve got loads of Aussies here on that visa. Most come and get a sponsored position in a cricket team, or rugby team (league of course), then end up getting a job through contacts made. At least that's how it works round our way. We`ve had a steady stream of them for around 15 years now.

However you may have a claim through your UK born grandfather if your father was born in a British colony. Please select the link on the right of the page regarding this subject

Am I eligible to apply for a British passport?

^^Like I said, you can't. But you are welcome to spend money with a company who say you 'may' be able to. You might want to ask them why they can't just tell you yes or no though before you give them any money.

Anyone who's father or mother was born in the UK is elligible for UK Citizenship/Passport. Though in case of citizenship via mother you'd need to be mid thirties at least (prior to mid 70's the citizenship via descendancy was only through a father).

I suspect people who've considered applying should do so very soon. The mood in Europe and the UK (as you can see even here on TD) is clearly becoming radically xenophobic. Eventually the UK will probably change that law (e.g. both parents must be British, or you only get "right to abode" for a limited time then after living in the UK for minimum 3 years or whatever you can apply for citizenship, etc, they could do many things to tighten it up)

If you're British living here in LOS, make sure your kids' births are registered at the Consulate. Also consider applying for a passport for them. Having said that, I doubt any change to the laws of descendancy would be retroactive..
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

I'd be careful if I were you. As soon as Scotland discover you, they'll sign you up for the national team, they're fucking desperate at the moment.
