    Identity Theft?

My wife decided to buy a new pickup and was going to finance it. (No problem, 30% down, good financial history, house, job, other cars, etc).

Today the bank calls her and said they've done a credit check and said the application was rejected because a credit bureau check showed a defaulted loan on a motorbike bought six years ago in her name that she knows nothing about.

She asked them how she could contact the credit bureau in question and they were typically unhelpful, just saying it had 'come up on the computer'.

Anyone know how to find and get in touch with these credit bureaus?

It can be quite a roundabout in UK, can't imagine the possibilities but ID theft is a doddle over here.

Seems odd that they have never contacted you to try and recover the debt.
Maybe someone with the same name but not the same National ID number.

Yeah, I thought it was odd they havent tried to collect. Plus she had a mortgage application three years ago approved with no problems. I'll get her to follow up on Monday.

Sister? It's not unheard of for a close relative that looks similar to use others documents

If her name is Noi then that might explain the mix-up.

Has she a sister/brother/other family member that may have used her as a reference/guarantor?

Have used Experian in the UK but not sure about credit checks here.

Agreed, but they have never tried to collect the debt.
An ID card must have been presented and that would display her registered address.

They may be bullshitting her using this as an excuse for why they don't wanna give her the credit.
If it was my bank I would go and speak with the manager and I would change bank if they then still don't show any interest in solving the problem.

That was actually my first thought. Especially as to why they were vague about the details of the outstanding loan, or who she could contact.

For 3 years now, my thai wife is plage every winter with a phony telephone bill that she refuses to pay. She never had this phone number, did not live in Bangkok, and was out of the Country, in Canada, for the period in question.
Every time, I end up calling and showing my anger, which stops the letters coming, for a few months...

I am sure someone stole my identity.
Went out and got drunk and took two local girls to a hotel room and had a shag and got home 9:00 the next morning still drunk.
Wife thinks it was me but I think someone stole my identity

May be she acted as guarantee for someone else who took the credit out for the motorcycle ? They then defaulted resulting in her being liable for that debt. 6 years can make one forget.

My wife used to get phone calls from a debt agency claiming he dead father owed money. He'd been dead 10 years before she got the first phone call. Having no money, plus knowing I wasn't going to cough up, she started to panic. I took her to see a lawyer who just said "ignore it.". She did, and the calls stopped. Before my wife got the phone call, her mother got them. It was her that gave them the wife's phone number. Dumb cnut.

Very hard to get correct details - had Thai GF some years ago, brought her back to OZ for 3 months visa.
She was constantly plagued by phone calls demanding payment for a Toyota pick up she said she did not have and new nothing about? - discovered had also borrowed motor bike which she had hocked- owner wasn't happy..
Turned out she had gone guarantor for workmate who had defaulted on loan.
During the course of my inquiries discovered a heap of porkies had been told about many things - gave her an instant DCM.

These credit checks are fairly new here and the historical lists must be done by someone going through old paper records and adding them to a database. Probably a mix up or a deliberate screw up. Don't know how you'd get them to clear it up.
