It's not obligatory to take the husband's name. However, if they do take your name, their passport is not changed, just a notation is made of the name change. ID cards, however, are changed with the western surname.

Some Thai women don't like having a western surname because they believe it hinders them and labels them in dealings in Thailand. However, it makes it easier traveling if she has your surname, and issuing credit cards, etc..
Concur with this advice as I did exactly the same and found things (traveling, banking, plane reservations, you name it...) to be a whole lot easier. One thing the wife did want to do was use her familay name as her middle name. We did and that makes for some great conversation.

One other thing, wife holds 2 passports. One Thai with the name change page added and one US.

Already been with her ten years. Got married Buddhist style four years ago.
I'm fed up not getting any of the benefits of being married. ie. the visas.

Sounds like you speak from experience? We aren't all dumb, you know?

Burr, according to the "Are you really married?" thread, you're buttoned-up.

    Virtually no difference.

You're right, I am. I just want to make it official, register it at the Ampur so I get the marriage certificate so that I can get visas easier.

A friend of mine told me that when a Thai woman marries a farang and takes his last name. she can't own property in Thailand, she can't use the 30 baht insurance scheme (which we do not want anyhow), and also loses other rights as a Thai citizen. He even said that his wife had to sell some property she owned before they met when she took his name.

I told him sone of it was true, and he kept insisting that it was.
You're right, it is not true.

^agree, merely by taking his last name this would not be true (and, in any event, there is no longer a legal requirement that woman have to take the last name of their husband in Thailand). However, if she also took his citizenship and revoked her Thai citizenship, she would be affected in this way. It may be that this caused some confusion. Have to say though, I have not heard of a Thai woman revoking her Thai citizenship. And even then, I think if she kept her Thai ID card she would likely not be affected by this.
