    Pig farming

I met a bloke the other day that said you can make money pig farming in Thailand. I pointed out that I knew of others that have tried it and failed. His reply was you don't feed them you let them free range ie feed themselves, and this is the way forward. Is he talking out of his arse and bound to fail as I've don't know of anybody doing this?
I live out amid the rice and tapioca fields and he claims you also can make money sub contracting with a tractor. I personally haven't seen any tractor owners living the good life and once again think he's talking out his arse. Should we/I help him before he starts his empire or do we/I let him find out the hard way ?

i started a thread about this a few weeks ago.
the masses said it wasn't worth it unless it's very large scale.

    I don't think 20 pigs counts.

I should think with pigs free range you can make good money after a few years of getting your initial investment back for fencing off areas for them to forage in, no idea of how much land you would need for each pig.

As for the tractors they can make double or treble what a farm worker can make after paying there bills, so theroriticaly it is great money, but is it worth the hassle for 600 to maybe if they get lucky 1,000baht per day after depreciation, repairs, fuel etc

It would take a hell of a lot of land for the pigs to get enough roots to fatten themselves or you would have to plant a lot of turnips or what ever for them to root up and live on, There is no nut bearing trees here or fruit trees to drop the fruit for them to eat. Plus that free range pigs have trichinosis and you pobly get your ass in a jam for selling them commercial.
I think he is talking out of his ass.
I have a friend that raises and sells pigs, but he does it like everyone else, has sheds with pens for the pigs and buys the feed, not a get rich deal that I can see.

I raised a couple pigs when I lived in Vermont. In the fall before butchering we'd press/squeeze a hundred gallons of apple juice for hard apple cider and feed the pressings to the pigs. Talk about some sweet hams!

Free range pigs. The neighbours would love it!

The Lao/Thai nephew raises pigs on a small scale. Took out a loan under the Thaksin regime and bought himself a rice husking machine. Husks the rice for the neighbourhood and feeds the husks to the pigs he breeds.
Business is good. He is saving up for a motorbike now.
