    Question Working in Thailand (?)

Just received a PM from another newbie, and thought the topic may be of interest to more people. The originator shall remain anonymous (unless he wants to step forward), but I thought the perhaps my reply would be of interest to other posters (unlikely) or that there are other posters who have something more/better to add to my reply.

    The PM I received was:

    w.shiva,
how u doin?? i've just started here after being on tv and noticed your post. i dont want to piss u off and i suppose youv'e been asked before, but how did you get into the business ( oil/ petrol) ??
i've been working , not quite in that sector, ( petroleum/ forecourts) comp ex. 7 & * etc... do i stand any chance, or is it alot more specialised??

i would appreciate a reply, even a simple 'no chance' if need be....
    regards
    XXXX
OG - don't worry about pissing me off - it takes more than a PM to do that!

I have worked in the oil & gas industry since I left uni, with the exception of a few years in the military. It is difficult to say if you have any change (to get a job in Thailand, I presume you mean to ask), since I don't know your background. It takes skills/experience and contacts, neither of which comes easily. My only recommendation is to do what I did when I started working in Se Asia 16 years ago (damn, I'm getting old!) - sell yourself dirt cheap to get a leg inside, and take it from there. My first few years were pretty frugal, and at one stage I was even close to packing it up and going home, but I got lucky and in retrospect it was definately worth it.

Getting work here is a bit like getting kisses - it may be a bit difficult at first, bit after a while it gets much easier.......

You'll never know until you have tried, but make damn sure you have an exit strategy - don't burn you bridges to home!:swordfigh

Don't know if the above was useful, or even the kind of reply you had in mind, but it is the best I can do for know.

    A sterling job WS.

I met a bloke in bangers once who was in the oil industry here.
Since I didn't know there was such an industry I shall now assume it was you.

    Hello again.

A lot of farangs here work in the oil industry in Thailand, they even have rigs off of southern Thailand, plus the big ones also have offices in bkk and mataput with loads of farangs working there, earning the big bucks aswell I might add

And not a Yank one I bet!! You'd think that would be impossible. Damn Caltex and Unocal are the biggest in the gulf. They shouldnt be hiring anybody other than Americans. They in turned should be encouraged to have their houses custom built by a British expat!!.

There's loads of oil men here.

I used to work in the exploration side of things, first for GSI, then Hallibuton. Now the office that I used to work at is run by Western Geo.

    Got any jobs going?

Yes of course I miss Thailand, but my wife and I are thoroughly enjoying living in Rome too. They say variety is the spice of life, so we count ourselves lucky at having the chance to get the best spices going.

As an asside, I find working outside of Thailand refreshing, a nice change from the office politics that are rampant in Thailand. - I guess that's what goes with fewer jobs than people willing to do them (or at least, guys willing to do anything to stay in Thailand).
