    Bringing equipment in

A friend of mine acquired some undeveloped land on an island, and one of the problem is there's no drinking water.
So he wants to import a plant to take the salt out and purify his own water.
Are there restrictions on this kind of import, for a private individual? Should he go through an agent to import and custom clear?

Damn does it rain enough for his utility water use and so he can get by with just making RO drinking water?? and does he have access to electricity??
A RO water maker to just make drinking water is not that large or spendy, but to make ALL water used would be huge.
I buy drinking water and use roof rain water for utility.

I drink rain-water and use well-water for utility.

His main prob is the salt in the water, can't use it for anything.

Most likely. Who knows what lurks in the minds of Thia customs officera?
    His best bet is to..
go through an agent to import and custom clear?
I helped work a resort in Fiji. We were on a small outer island, There was no water or electricity, we made our own. We actually mixed roof water and RO water & treated it with a small amount of chlorine. Drinking water was "Fiji Water" at a buck a pop.

Most RO units require a full head of pressure to work properly So he's looking at pumping salt water up, then gravity or pressure pumping it to the unit. We pumped water from about 100 meters out in the lagoon in a pit we found (thankfully it didn't need to be dug) and stored it in tankls on top of the highest hill on our property

Before he just buys and RO unit, he should get a full design so he can order all at once. By all means if he is not experienced in import/export her use a customs agent. You might get fucked but not nearly as badly if you went in on your own.

I had a PUR on my last cruising boat, ran on 12v and made 4 gal per hr. so that would not take to much run time if he is just using it for home drinking, Takes about 800 psi to force the water thru the filter tho. you can drink roof water, lots of farang here bouts do, and Thai love the stuff, but look in their tanks and turn around and puke, lots of snail shells with the snail rotted out and dead lizards floating around dropping their rotten flesh in the water, plus 3 inches of bird shit off the roof in the bottom of the jar..No thanks, I will buy a couple hun a week worth of water.
But the PUR like the one I had just comes in a little box and could be shipped by post.
I got a set of stainless pots with copper encapsulated bottoms from the states that were heavier than that water maker would be and they never said shit, cept ask me what it was..
But of coarse, next time they might break it off in my ass too.

and he could use a small pump feeding salt to it and let the access flow go off and it would be flushing the membrane, input is about 7 times the fresh output.

"A friend of mine acquired some undeveloped land on an island, and one of the problem is there's no drinking water."

Is the island in Thailand as I have had the opportunity to look at 'developing' property on an island here in Thailand. I did a feasability study for Club Med on an island near Phuket.

In the process of the study I had an official copy of Thailand land ownership/developement laws produced. The first problem is that I don't believe a Chanote title can be obtained. Most island land that is NOT owned by the Navy or the Royal Family is for agro purposes only Nor Sor 3/4 or something like that.

There are very very strict rules about infrastructure, where it is placed, how high, measurement to 100 year high water mark, visibility from the sea etc. etc.

Club Med was willing to sink $125MM in a project but went away after reading the study. Got a lot of thank you very much along with a nice check.

Be very wary about sinking any serious cash into an island, especially now that the Land Department has had their nickers ripped over the mess on Phuket. I've got a copy of the study somewhere on one of my back up drives. I'll see if I can find the stuff on the rules, limitations and permits etc.

I could go on and on about the problems to be encountered, most of the small ones can be taken care of with a wad of cash but not all.

Yes, it is on an island near Phuket, and I share your reservations. Any further info would be well appreciated.
