Thread: Washers

As mentioned in my house construction thread, the "free" tap that came with our kitchen sink has a base too small for the hole in the sink. An ordinary washer would fix that right up.

Unfortunately, washers are (like bricks) not for sale in Korat. We have been to hardware stores, machine shops, auto and motorcycle repair shops, metal working shops, etc. When we ask for a washer the look at us as if we'd asked for a piece of the moon.

We found one place out in Pak Thong Chai that had two sizes of washer, both too small.

I found one on the floor of a motorcycle shop that was just a shade too small. When we asked where they got it, they didn't know.

I even went to one shop that specializes in selling nuts and bolts of all sizes. But, they don't sell washers.

Any idea where I might find a washer like this:

mate, post the outside diameter and the hole size required in millimeters and i'll see what i can do

There's gotta be a fab shop that does stainless and can punch one out for you. Think you;re gonna want stainless.

Thanks for the offer. Let me follow up on FriscoFrankie's suggestion before you go to any trouble.

Oddly we asked at a place that fabs stainless steel. Odd they didn't offer to make one. I'll ask them.

Every single hardware shop I've ever been to, and these are many in Bangers as well as out in the boonies, has a wide selection of washers, including building suppliers. I find it hard to believe it's not available in Korat.

Good point. At first, she didn't know the word. But, when we finally found a shop that had one, she read it off the box. And, all day today we had the sample I picked up off the floor of the motorcycle repair shop. Right after that we went to a large hardware store just up the street. We showed the proprietor the washer and asked if they had a larger one. The response? They don't carry them at all.

Home Pro has none; even though they have about the biggest selection of screws, nuts and bolts of any store in town. The Home Mart "Builder" place, which is huge. Had none. That's right. A huge place that specializes in selling to contractors does not carry washers of any size.

Lotus had several boxes of small lock washers. That's it.

Ms. B went out on her own this morning to look some more and came back nearly in tears because she knows how pissed off I am that after hours of searching we can't locate this simple and common hardware item....

I am quite sure i have this washer, post the size you need...

Thickness, inner hole diameter and outer diameter, but we accept only millimeter as reference ! 1pce ? 2 pcs ? 10 pcs ?

I'll even deliver it to the Japanese tomorow lunch time if you wish so ! i plan to be there 12h30...

And if you want it specially made special for you with a collar or other funny shapes, then draw it, or come by and have a cup of coffee...

^Thanks for the offer. I finally found a shop that stocks washers. This is across from SaveOne, not far from where I live. The sell all sorts of nuts and bolts and many sizes of washers. I'll check to see if they have the size I need. If not, I'll get back to you.

And if you really want to pay for it and buy in a proper shop in Korat there is this choice by rank :

1. Chocksima supply, Hua Thale inter., take a left 1 km small shop on the left, biggest supply of nuts and bolts stainless in Korat... ( steel to ! )

2. Boonthai Hardware, the one near Nigth Bazaar, a handy boss khun Pichit, knows all gets you all in a day if not in stock... ( Boonthai Machinery, should have it as well...)

3. Lek Sahakit, has many stuff, clever young chap, pass Hua Thalee inter. straigth 300m on the rigth toward Dan Kwian...

OK. I'll take you up on it. Hole needs to be 20 mm, wide enough for 1/2" pipe to fit through. Outer diameter should be 35-40 mm. Thickness can be 2 to 4 mm. Stainless is best. Quantity is two pieces.

Bloddy seppo values, the 3 mm washer have a hole of 19.5 mm !

I do not know if this will work !

But seen that half inch is 12.7 mm and if this is inside due to water piping, with a 2 mm wall thickness it will give outer diameter 18.7 mm, what should then be ok...

Otherwise you will have to us the thinner ones or buy a file at Home Pro...

^^ yeah I guess thats true, I guess it is just more dramatic when you know the word in their own language and they dont.

We have a great book called Word By Word by Steven Molinsky and Bill Bliss. Each page has a picture of a particular location or situation, like "The Bathroom". Each object in the picture is identified by number. Listed below the photo is a list of terms in both Thai and English. It's perfect for identifying things like tools and hardware parts where looking them up in a dictionary might not provide the best answer.
