    Kindle 3

I've finally decided to buy one of these things- a Kindle3 keyboard.
Should I buy via Amazon, or is there a decent local source?
Quite happy to have it delivered from Bkk.
If I buy thru' Amazon, are there any hassles with Thai customs?

Like, doesn't anyone know the price of a kindle3 in Bangkok?
    Thought these things were popular.

I bought mine off Amazon, and I don't live in Thailand.

So there's fuck all I can tell you that you don't already know.

sab, you can buy any cheap Android device and then install the "kindle" application from Amazon to download all those books on your Android tablet

I suggest you read first Professional Reviews of the Kindle and other Android Tablets to make your choice and ask yourself the actual motivation for buying such a device

if you just want to look cool, I suggest you buy the iPad or the other expensive gay alternative, the Samsung Galaxy pad

The thing that bugs me about reading technical/reference material on Kindles is that you cannot flick through the book like you can with a real book.

It would be good if it had skip forward/backwards by 5/10/50 pages dedicated buttons (not hidden away in a menu - which it does not even have AFAIK).

Or some cool touch screen slider interface to facilitate flicking.

Actually the new "X-Ray" feature on the Kindle Touch may solve that problem Looper.

And Sabang, the tablet screens do not lend themselves to long periods of reading, especially in sunlight.

That's the main reason for a Kindle.

It's awful to read a book off a back-lit screen- the standard Kindle screen is like actual paper and relies on ambient light.

I have a Kindle Fire on order, but I will only use it for newspapers, magazines, and books with color pictures and illustrations- my keyboard Kindle will remain as my 'reader'.

I recommend ordering through Amazon- I explained how shipping to Thailand works in the thread that's linked above in post #5.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Yup- I just got an email saying mine was shipped yesterday (it was pre-ordered in September)- Amazon won't send it internationally yet, so I had it sent to a friend's house in the States- he's coming to LOS in December and will bring it over for me.

I would order it as soon as possible if that's the case- I got my order in on the first day they were accepting them- there might be a bit of a wait if you order one now as I would imagine they have loads of people waiting for them.

You should at least run an order through Amazon (you don't have to finalize it) to see when their current shipping date is at the moment.

For reading, plain and simple- handy too that I can check my email while out and about. I'll be spending more time in Ubon over the next couple of months, so I figure now is a good time to pick one up. If the kindle were close to the price of a notepad, or laptop, I'd go for one of them. But Kindle is much better to read with.

The kindle Fire stuff doesn't really light my fire, I'm quite happy with ye basic Kindle3- I prefer the manual keypad anyway, and personally I'd swap an unneeded colour display for longer battery life.

That makes my thread kind of redundant then- thanks for pointing it out.

I think where the Kindle Fire will work is (a) the browsing and (b) magazine subscriptions.

As a book reader I'll let you know when I get it.

Plus an email app and the ability to port PDFs and Word documents will be handy for work.

I had a play with the new kindles and the e-ink is superb. reading in daylight has to be one of the best arguments for getting these screens. The tablets are unusable in outside in full sunlight.
Saying that I will for the time being stick to tablets, i need the colour, read inside and the battery life is not an issue.

^^^^ I can certainly see the upside of a color screen if you're gonna be doing much reading of glossies and graphics (or porn). Greyscale however, makes a Statement.

I reckon I've decided- convenience wins over minimum price, as usual with sab.
Dr Bob's link has the Kindle I want- the 6" wifi graphite w/keyboard- for 7200 bht.
Problem is, it won't accept an order "Availability- 7 days". Thai time.
So, where now. Does anyone know of any other sites selling kindle in Thailand?
Any help appreciated, cheers. ^ Yeh, thats bobs link- out of stock for now unfortunately.

That's because they're going to order it from Amazon once you pay them (which takes three business days to Thailand- at least that's how long it took to get mine), add 20% to the price (it's 6K from Amazon including shipping and import tax), and pass it along to you (and you won't have a registered Kindle account if you get it that way).

Don't think so- they won't even accept an order for it, only for the models they say are in stock.

I believe if you identify it as a gift they will set it up for you with the correct US address and market.
