Seems it's fixed.
Following the link I had above, I had to uninstall the primary IDE channel... then it installs itself as 'Ultra DMA Mode 5' instead of the 'PIO Mode' it had changed to.

And did you find the virtual basic script?
I tried to, first. But couldn't out what the hell I was supposed to do with it. Googling the comp name and problem brought up two others who had the same issue and fixed it by following this:
DMA reverts to PIO | Windows Problem Solver
Nice it's solved. Computers can frustrate any user specially when a monkey played with it.

First off make absolutely certain you have exactly the right driver:
Unknown Device Identifier
THEN you can start pissing around with the settings.
