    Android apps: Recommendations

    A few apps to recommend:

    - Opera Browser: quite nice interface
    - QuickOffice: All in One Viewer for PDF, Word, XLS, PowerPoint
    - ES FileManager: Very Cool Explorer for local media, USB, FTP, SAMBA, CLOUD
    - Root Explorer: To navigate through the whole root fs
    - WinAmp: a classic
    - VLC Direct: to watch streaming video

I am looking for a nice Video Player that could play local AVI files, so any recommendation is welcome

    The King James Bible

a must read when you are bored, hilarious, complete nutcase chapters of drivel after drivel.

Must have been written by some bipolar nutters. Thank god, not of it is real.

I am struggling through different AVI/MKV players to see which one is best

MoboPlayer seems to be the nicest so far,

avoid Android Media Player and RealPlayer,

what game recommendations for android ?

I have great little war game on my note - but have not played it for a long time

I wouldn't mind putting some others on it - tried the hungry shark evolution - not for me

and good 3d games for those of us with quad cores ?

    ^Real Racing 3 is tops.

    Hungry Sharks evolution is good.

(Your Note might not be fast enough, have a good enough screen or have the PPI to fully enjoy them...)

Sony Media Player, Sony Walkman, Sony small apps, are all excellent... )

I do not like the games that require you to tilt - I would much rather have buttons

I have got a set of the stick on toggles which I was going to put on the ainol tab but then my driver bashed it with the seatbelt

I like the idea of the archos gamepad because it has the built in controls and is a full fledged android tablet

Smartphone games are all about the tilt...

RR3 is as good as you can get on a smartphone. Obviously, Sony is tops due to their playstation links, fast processors, screens, etc. If ya wanna play games then get a games console...

I thought about picking one up meself, but hardly ever play games and get bored very quickly...

the gamepad 2 has WiDi built in so you are able to beam to your big screen games , movies , etc

though I am not sure how many televisions support WiDi yet without a HDMI dongle.

intels ultrabook spec had designated originally that the notebooks would have WiDi onboard but not many have come out with it -

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WirelessHD

I would like some sort of wireless HD in the next notebook I buy

    I've just started out with this android / touch screen tablet lark;
not too impressed but I am trying to be .
Is there something like CCleaner for android , to clear my cache ,history etc ?

    Book reader -

    I tried Baldrics recommendation Coolreader
    free
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...org.coolreader

Very good ! and better than the other readers I have.
My text to speech girlfriend Ivona Amy likes it too.
At least after setting the pages to auto scroll/ turn or something , now she reads to me while the text highlights , and the pages turn .
    lovely.
Free whilst its in beta .
    You need the ivona HQ
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...vona.tts&hl=en
And the voice you prefer , eg Amy
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ta.eng.gbr.amy

    Ad blocker

I have Adblockplus , think it's from a torrent , working ok sometimes , often not eg Siam cuties have the whip hand over it ....
there's a ''Filter subscription list'' in its options that I don't understand
    tick one ...
    easylist - fanboys list - etc .. ?

    torrents

ttorents pro - works good -after I found I could change the default black screen (wtf )to white .

    Navigation

    I downloaded a torrent of
    Tomtom United Kingdom
cannot get it to work though , it just tells me ''no network connection'' .
a comment in one of the torrents advises-
''you need to put tomtom folder in the internal memory /mnt/sdcard/ then it will work''
    mnt ??
guess I'll just have to get lost as usual ..

if you look in the root directory you will find a folder called /mnt ( mount - snigger )

you should have sdcard ( internal usable phone memory ) and extsdcard ( your micro sd card )

I use file expert HD as my file explorer etc

For eBooks I'm partial to FBReader. The only game I've got is the extravagantly priced (which is to say that it's, you know, priced) Backgammon NJ. Quite good, if you're into that sort of thing.

Any recommendations for a simple file manager? My old Android 2.2 gadget had a "File Browser," yet I was surprised to find on my new hi-so Sony Ultra that there is no native app for letting me know what the hell is in there. Google Play has a dizzying number of choices.

OI File Manager is the one I mostly use.

Cheers Butters and Harry, two solid recommendations.

AirDroid does look the business, but to be honest I'm a simple man with simple aspirations, and so more inclined at this point to give OI a go.

(Barring some other recommendation, of course. Where the subject matter of Sony 'phones is concerned I do tend to genuflect in the direction of a place vaguely located somewhere East-northeast of Yemen, where little goats are loved, and appreciated, and repeatedly loved. )

Solovpn does exactly what it says on the box, and more easily and consistently than other ones I've tried.
