    2nd Hand Laptops

I want to get a second hand laptop to replace one that died recently.

Don't want to spurge too much on it but about 10,000b maybe 12,000 at a push.

Does anyone have any idea what spec machine i might be able to pick up for this budget?

I will mainly be using it for Office type stuff and browsing the web, my lad however will no doubt commandeer it at any available opportunity to play games so it's going to need to have a fairly decent graphics card, ram etc...

I have 0 experience with the second hand market, I could spend more and get a new one, but seeing how quickly my family managed to dispatch our previous laptop, i'm not feeling inclined to splurge.

    Any pointers much appreciated.

    Go to Tesco Lotus

You will get a new one for that amount

The Acer Netbook is only 8500 baht, then you will have to install your own operating system

    I agree.
My wife got Windows re-installed for only 300 baht (or so). Compared to Western prices, that's a steal.
What brand was the deceased laptop ?

It was a Dell Inspiron. Old, but decent processer 2gig ram. I thought it might be fixable but apparently it aint. That said i'll be taking it with me when i go to have a look at 2nd hand ones as i'd like a second opinion. A Thai "can not be fixed" doesn't always mean a lot.

Will have a look at Tesco too, cheers.

i'd be wary of buying a 2nd hand one unless you know the person selling it.

but for 10k you should be able to get an OK one.

Banana IT have an online catalogue which might give you an idea of what you can get for that.

I never had a problem with Dell, good computers, there will always be duff things you buy, mostly manufactured just before finishing time on a Friday night

My Inspiron died about 3 months ago (gave 3 years of pretty good service; the last 6 months were painful...); I picked up a Fujitsu (i3, good spec) at Pantip Plaza for 16k with a 2 year manufacturer warranty; both Dell and HP machines could be had a bit cheaper. The price has come down already, so you can get a good machine for 13-14k as stated above; the earlier generation pentiums can be had for 1 or 2k less - if you spent a couple of hours walking around Pantip and checking out the prices (start at the HP shop on the third floor, Dell shops on the 4th and 5th) then I'm sure you'd get a decent new machine for 12k (not with windows though, but they'll load the s/w for free for you in the shop, if that's what you want); I went with Ubuntu rather than Windows, it's free (they downloaded it for me in the shop) and works with word, PPP, adobe, etc, no problems at all - love it...

Yeah I would stretch another 4 to 5k and buy new, a second hand machine whilst might function satisfactorily its battery will most likely be fooked and that alone will cost 3k if you want to use it without it plugged into the mains for more than 15 minutes.

^ hear hear, and to get it running fast again you will need to reformat

Plus the guy could have been a deviant, like the guy I bought mine off, and left traces of Peter Andre, Clash Fan and hairy Japanese Beavers, all over it

A format is nothing, I have a perfectly good 4yr old duo core Acer lappy here, works as it should but the battery wont hold a charge, to me its worthless but to some they would sell for 10k if there was an un-educated person willing to buy it.

In-fact I would not buy any laptop/PC new or secondhand unless it was freshly formatted with a clean OS instal.

    Caveat Emptor.

That's horrendous, I didn't watch it (goes without saying...), just remember the runours.

    Wanking material for Papillion though.

sorry mate - i missed this post before. Yeah a laptop will be my first (and probably only) port of call. I'd take you up on that if you were here - very kind of you.

Re the software - the laptop that got water on it had a copy of win 7 on it and i had to be careful what updates i downloaded so am aware of the pitfalls. That said, if i can get genuine, as a rule, I will.

My Dad bought a macbook pro recently he seems very happy with it.

The main problem i'm going to have is sticking to budget. Despite what I said about not feeling inclined to spend a lot of money, I'm a kid at heart and can see me thinking "fuck it" when confronted with loads of boys toys.
