Hi

My Mrs. killed my laptop, while i'm waiting to find out how much it's going to cost to fix and therefore whether i should just buy a new one, i've been lent an acer travelmate. it's old, running xp and only has 256mb ram.

Before i go and buy a flash drive i was just wonderin really if anyone has used one to boost the memory on an old laptop before and whether it's worth it.

Ive done it in the past, made no noticable difference for general email/internet/MS office duties.

will it help me running say office whilst also running the internet / running anti virus / spywear scans?

thanks harry. think i can get a 2gb card for about 300b so it might be worth doing it any way, if it doesn't work i'll just lash a load of Porn on the flash drive instead!

Dude, you have no idea. You can't use a flash drive on any Windows operating system for page file. The drivers for them don't load soon enough. Your on Vista trying to show us an non researched method for XP. Fail. I'm thinking maybe we could set the USB drivers to load before everything else. Like with msconfig.

Since the O/S detects any flash drives LAST, this would not work. The pagefile needs to be detected first to load the O/S. Which is why it's on the C: Drive

Total waste of time, mumbling commentary, useless technical advice, does not work with XP, and for Vista there is ReadyBoost. Notice how your USB flash drive activity LED fails to show any activity, and how XP continues to access your hard drive wildly.

like this ull destroy your usb key in weeks, maybe days and usb pen drive couldnt be a slower choice. anything, remember anythink is faster than that. ur talking about destroying usb keys not performance or any other benefit

Upgrade the RAM to 1 gig, It will take 2gig if you like

put Ubuntu on your flash drive, problem solved

cheers for that, i wanted a quick cheap fix that isn't permanent to be honest. I'm probably going to have to for out 3-5,000b to fix my own (or if its more expensive just buy a new one) so i don't fancy forking out to upgrade someone elses laptop. If it were my own then that's deffo what i'd do.

it's a linux version that looks like a WinXP, small, fast and plug and play

256MB RAM is actually enough for running WinXP, you simply need to optimize the system and remove the usual MS garbage that slow down the whole system, takes one hour to do

I have been running WinXP with 256MB and never felt the need to upgrade the RAM. Putting a faster hard disk has actually boosted speed since the swap reside on the hard disk

my advice is not to go with Vista or Win7 like the other virgins geeks are advocating. Waste of time and the user interface is not as friendly and logical as WinXP

Don't bother, he's an idiot.

I'd say upgrade the RAM. If it's easy to access you can do it yourself and it will work out cheaper. Look on YT and you'll normally find a tutorial, or you'll find the info you need on the net, 1gb isn't expensive nowadays.

thanks for that, this is just a temporary measure so i'll just have to grin and bear 256mb for a little bit although depending on the prices i guess a RAM upgrade might be a nice thank you for borrowing the laptop!!

upgrading RAM is the idiot answer for those who don't know how to use Windows. Of course, more RAM means more memory for virus execution so at the end it's pointless and will slow down even more your system if you are infected

I do appreciate all the advice but it's only a temporary fix while i get my laptop sorted or get a new'un.

Upgrade of RAM might be a nice way to say thanks to the Thai chap that lent me his Travelmate, but only at the right price.
