    allocating bandwidth on a network

Is there an easy way to put bandwidth caps on a network? I have a relatively slow internet connection for the UK living out in the sticks (6.5GB) but once my wife starts watching streaming Thai movies it can stop my downloads and even prevent pages loading browsing the internet. Trouble is that it streams as far in advance as it can, so for the first 30mins it is streaming the remaining hour of the movie. she also screws up my clock radio, which is a wireless internet radio.

Use QoS on your Router. How to do it depends on the model of router you are running. Are you familiar with configuring your router through its internal web page?

torrent the movies for her might be the easiest way out if you are unfamiliar with QoS

Sorry for the delay, I've configured the router in the past but not looked at it for a couple of years now. I have BT homehub and can't see QoS anywhere in the settings.

Good suggestion about torrents but it is mainly the Thai soaps she watches at Thai TV Online Television & Lakorn from DooTV. I did work out how to capture the streams, but that gives the same problems.

Are you on WI FI with a laptop BR ?

Try running an ethernet lead from your router to your laptop

BR from what I can surmise from the web, it's a service that may or may not be turned on on your line.

Suggest you call BT and explain that you want to use QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritise your traffic, and ask them how to do it.

Is there somewhere in your router page where you can 'bridge' the connection?

If you cant get QOS, download Net limiter from their official site

NetLimiter - The Ultimate Bandwidth Shaper

The username and password to get the pro version are in the comments here

    NetLimiter Pro v3.0.0.10 (32/64-bit) â

Don't download that one, apparently it's full of viruses, read the comments, you will understand

Install it on your desktop PC

    Here's what it does

NetLimiter is an ultimate internet traffic control and monitoring tool designed for Windows. You can use NetLimiter to set download/upload transfer rate limits for applications or even single connection and monitor their internet traffic. Along with this unique feature, Netlimiter offers comprehensive set of internet statistical tools. It includes real-time traffic measurement and long-term per-application internet traffic statistics NetLimiter provides to the user a lot of features: * Limits You can use NetLimiter 3 to set download or upload transfer rate limits for applications, connectionsand filters. With limits you can easily manage your internet connection's bandwidth (bandwidth shaper) and share it among all applications running on your computer. * Network monitor NetLimiter 3 shows list of all applications communicating over network it's connections and transfer rates. * Connection blocker You can allow or deny certain applications to connect to or from any network or zone. * Filters With filters you can define groups of connections or applications and then apply rules to them. You can for example set DL/UL limit only for a specific IP address range or for a group of two or more applications. * Rule editor and scheduler Rule editor helps you to create advanced rules. For example, you can create limit or firewall rule for a group of applications which is valid only in a given time interval (=you can schedule limits, grants and fw rules). * Zone Editor Zone is remote address space which your machine is communicating with. You can monitor or control traffic for a given zone separately. There are two predefined zones - Local and Internet. With this tool you can create your own zones and edit them. * Statistics NetLimiter 3 stats module is intended for long-term measurement of internet traffic. This feature lets you to track your internet traffic history since you've installed NetLimiter. * Traffic chart This feature is known from previous version of NetLimiter. Traffic chart shows application's or connection's real time activity. * Remote administration You can control and monitor other computers remotely from one place. * Infos NetLimiter 3 provides you with and additional information like WHOIS, traceroute etc. Will be available soon. * Permissions editor With this tool, you can decide, which user is allowed to monitor or control network traffic. ^ Yeah that's my set-up, WAN / LAN bridged. Missus uses laptop from WAN, I use PC on LAN. Works good. If she doesn't behave I crank down her bandwidth

the "bridge" between the WAN and the LAN is required so packets can be routed between them.

most quality of service done by home routers is based on the uart port from whence the packets originate - you give them a priority based on what you think you want .
