    Advice: living without Microsoft...

    Hello computer experts.

I'm so fukin sick and tired of losing days of working time due to viruses and crashes. I'm also sick and tired of having Microsoft implant themselves into my computer/programs/life without being asked; they are one fukin intrusive company.

So, my computer is now so riddled with various viruses and problems that I'm gonna throw it away (it's a Dell laptop - it is dead...).

My question is: I use word, acrobat reader/writer and powerpoint all the time; can I have a computer setup that enables me to continue my work, but avoids Microsoft operating systems and programs. I also use yahoo and hotmail; what would you suggest as email that is not linked with Microsoft? How about web browser?

Is this a good idea? Doable?

Many thanks for your sensible advice.

    Buy a Mac!

Takes little time to figure out the differences. I never used one until had to for work. My PC's are same as yours. My Mac I use all day and every day. Every once in a while it freezes. Turn off and on and off I go again.

No Microsoft links; not bought out by Microsoft yet? I'm happy to give it a go.

Yip M word excel powerpoint. No problem. The photo and vid programs are very easy to use and seamless. If you wish you can split your hard drive and run windows as well as the Mac system. Apparently windows runs quicker on the Mac than a PC. When I first changed did that, but bothered less and less with the PC side. Now use MAC only.

Not an expert just a user. For me it runs great. Have no problems and have not used a techi in years.

I use Yahoo page on Safai and google on Firefox again no problems.

Getting riddled with virii can happen with any OS.

You might want to try Ubuntu it has a very similar feel to MS or Mac and is free the oppen office programs (once again free) are similar to the MS programs tough I still find the MS Office programs easier to use.

I've done that already, but the virus came back within 2 days... It's also damn tricky because it stops the screen from coming up (I think it attacks the graphics card or something???).

    Yes they do.

More importantly, think of the hours you could spend arguing with Butterfly about it!

That on it's own should convince you to buy one.

This is what I use. Ubuntu was installed a almost two years ago, and it has been virus free since. No I dont like the open office as much as microsoft, so I do my office work in my office on a windows equipped PC.

But I must say I just bought my daughters Mac airs, and they are the coolest machine I have ever seen. My next computer will be an apple.

I, like many, have considered dumping Microsoft OS. Seems as Ubuntu is a logical choice and legitimate contender in this hard-nose competition.

Is Ubuntu universally compatable with the more common software and assorted applications? I do know that f_cking MS has done everything in their power to gather a hold on most compatable items. What is the low-down on all this?

I have to use Windows for work. No fan of Bill Gates, but Windows 7 is the best Windows I've used. Rock-solid, my computer is on 24/7 and I can't remember the last time I've had to reboot.

So were my previous O/S until they bring out a new version and release viruses for the old versions to force you to spend more money on their products... Frankly, Microsoft fuk me right off with their illegal business practices.

When will windows 7 change though; they'll stop supporting it, and it'll just become a virus magnet...

I'm using VMware Fusion to run Windows 7 on a Virtual Machine (whatever that is), there's no need to reboot the mac to run it, it just opens up in a window like any other application.

I've started using it in the last month as I've got a couple of programs that aren't available on mac.

You may get problems using other versions of PowerPoint.

If you don;t use any one else's PPT files, you'll be OK, but there are issues between Open Office, Mac & MS Office's versions which may cause you a few headaches down the line.

You could of course, stop letting MS download anything it wants onto your computer...

Yeah, I've been allowing microsoft downloads automatically, and that's probably stupid of me: keep them out, I agree.

So they publish all over t'interwebnet why they're releasing a patch, people don't apply them and then snivel why their computer keeps fucking up.

    Good luck with that.
