    Question Audio file conversion software

Is there any free download that will convert, say.. a WAV file to an mp3??

You know, without having to burn it onto a dvd and import it into iTunes - that's the only way I can think of.

I asked Audacity to do it as it has the option listed but every time it comes up with some lame excuse as to why it can't do it directly and starts whining like a big girl.

If you need a Mac program then I use Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate.

Yes, i know it says Video in the name but it also does audio very well. You can get a free download by googleing the name but there might be some restrictions on the amount you can convert. I can't remember if I paid to upgrade to the paid version or not.

This will do it - Format Factory

    http://www.formatoz.com/

It's free, very easy to use and does the job perfectly.

MPEG Streamclip says it can do it but is full of shit because you only get the last few seconds of audio. I'm trying to convert an MPEG Audio file, thanks for the replies I shall investigate hence forth.

Apologies, the previous link is for PC download. Seems there is a version for Mac here:

    Format Factory Mac Free Download

    Or, you could try this:

Audio Sound File Converter Software. Convert wav, mp3, dvd, midi, dvf etc.

Never tried the above but it seems there's a Pro paid version and a free version that converts only the most popular formats (which surely includes WMV, MP3 etc)

As always do a custom install and make sure you kick out all the attendant rubbish that might be bundled in its belly (Format Factory will try and install a tool bar and default your search engine to 'Ask' for example)

    VLC or QT

QuickTime Pro will open the WAVE file and you can save it in MP3

I bet you didn't know that,

FLIP is for AVI decoding and encoding, also include their own MP3 layer

QTPro has their own MP3 layer,

Monkeynuts you are a great help, I have a Final Cut question for you while we're here...

Is there another way/shortcut I put the time line at the beginning of an FCP project instantly other than clicking on it in the player window?

Which key is the 'home' key?

I have a 2006 MacBook Pro, the one with the silver keys and none of them says home.

Sorry, forgot about that. This should do it (lifted from a nerdy blog):

"There is no Home key or End key on the Macbook Pro keyboard. However, you can still execute the equivalent commands. For the Home command, press down the Fn + Left Arrow keystroke combination. For the End command, press the Fn + Right Arrow keyboard combination"

Super Video Converter, probably the best free one out there, although it requires some understanding of the various encoding options. No mactard version though.

    Download it here
