Down & Uploading (How risky is it?)

Just curious as to what the risks are these day as internet usage seems to be getting its screws tightened.

I've never really been that interested in downloading stuff but with the garbage that's available - true tv included - i've started downloading a fair amount of old films, some porn too.

Should people be watching their backs these days?

No more than usual. If you're downloading torrents, check the comments and make sure you're only downloading video or audio files. A lot of scammers post password protected zip files and tell you to go to their malware-infested soviet website to get the password.

Most of the infections I see come from either USB driver or Web browsers, so turn off autorun and autoplay, and install a browser like Firefox with addons like WOT and you'll be fine.

Don't download anything that looks suspicious. The old Internet adage has never aged:

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

There is a risk, but based on what I have seen it is small to insignificant to home users in Thailand. I do know of a case where a person who downloaded via Bit Torrent at his workplace, got a warning letter from the authorities. That is the only case I know of so far, though.

I suppose i wasn't being too clear. I'm not really concerned from the point of viruses etc, but the government and or ISP monitoring download and upload usage.

For instance, over the last month i must have DL 100g of 80s movies and old cult films!

Someone here recommend Peerblock and I run it on all of my PCs:

    PeerBlock

But bittorrent is NOT illegal per se. Just what you do with it.

I'm pretty certain my ISP knows how I max out my bandwidth every month, but I'm paying for the privilege and I'm not down the market knocking out dodgy DVDs so they don't really give much of a sh*t.

EDIT: I would be a *lot* more careful in the UK or US though, where the copyright police have far more power and influence.

If it was from the authorities, then someone in his company grassed him up. No-one likes a grass.

Well unless all of the workplace computers had their own internet connection, someone from the IT dept. had to have pointed the finger.

Ah, I see what you mean. It was not addressed to him personally though, but to the organisation.

Too true, I got a threat from my ISP that they would discontinue my service after I downloaded an episode of CSI from Isohunt a few months back.

Miserable bastards. Mind you, that would have earned me, at around 23 episodes a season, about 115 threats....

    Per CSI.

They file an occasional multi-million dollar lawsuit against some hapless schmuck who makes near minimum wage, then publicize the hell out of it to scare the rest of the sheeple from downloading. Essentially it's little more than legalized terrorism.

    Don't they ever!

The damages that the Association believes is available to it, as provided by federal copyright infringement law, are in the range of $750 to $150,000 per downloaded song.
They could wipe me out for Billions!
