    Any ftp experts out there?

I'm trying to set up an ftp server using FileZilla. On my router, I've gone into Advanced Setup/NAT/Virtual Server and created an ftp server but I'm not sure of the ip address. I have a friend trying to connect through a browser. The connection on his end times out and I see no activity in the server log. When he connects he should get a username/password prompt.

    Any suggestions?

You have not created an ftp server in the router, you have created a hole in the NAT firewall so traffic from the outside can reach a server inside your LAN.

You have to specify, in that setup, the IP address of the machine running the Filezilla ftp server and which port# you want to forward (make a firewall hole for), 21 is the normally used port# for ftp.

I have used Whatismyip.com to discover my address. Do I use this address or is their a LAN side address that I should use? The port number on the router is 21 and is the listening port in FileZilla.

Does the fact that TOT uses NAT with dynamic ip addresses make it more difficult to set this up?

    Thanks for your quick response.

the IP you get from whatsmyip should be on the WAN ( internet) side of your router.

then you forward a port on your router ( FTP port 21 ) from your WAN to the machine IP that is running the FTP server.

What are you setting it up for? Is it a one time thing or a regular/daily download?

If you're trying to transfer lots of large files to your mate, you'd save yourself a lot of time and effort if you use DropBox.com or Yousendit.com.

Of you could even set up a Gmail account and use that to share files (just give him the password) using GSpace Gspace.

It all depends what number and size of files you want to send him.

If it isn't a massive requirement, like you want to send him DVD rips, then pissing about trying to set up an FTP server when you're a novice is probably overkill.

I hope this isn't one of them kiddie fiddling rings....
