Dummies guide to starting a webforum

Well, that's the plan. First you need unique angle, say all things simian. Then you need a webaddress, I'm thinking Willyking.com, forget all the other .orgs and .tvs, .com is were its at. How do I register my name?
Do I do that on my own or get someone like Xzyte to host it for me?

Then, seems clear to me that free forum software is not the way to go, ask nickA about obsomo. So vbullet
in seems to be everywhere, can you just buy a copy in panthip plaza? Or are the computer dudes who made it smarter than the chinese pirates? So how much for an original?

Now, i'll need some moderators, how much do you have to pay them? Obviously I get to be superdupper head admin.

Should I use my own server, or no need yet?

Writers, suppose I cannot just rip stuff off the web eveywhere. Is it better to open a skeleton and hope it gets filled, will posters not get disenfranchised if there is naught there and not come back?

Money, google add sense is shite, so targeted ad banners is the way to go, I can think of a couple of businesses that would like to pay to advertise on a monley forum, the zoo, the pet store, partyhire shops

If you use a fake vbulletin your server will be notified and most likely will take your site down, good chance you wont get your database back aswell, vbulletin is around $200 and the seo software for it about $150, ipb is just as good and a bit cheaper.

not if you own the server, you could always block the IP that is being called for "license ping"

^ How are you going to know what IP is checking your heartbeat???

A lot of software broadcasts it's presence to HQ also...

tcpdump ? never heard of it ? plenty of other tools to monitor your net traffic,

get the IP from your net trace, and block it. Quite easy.

actually, the IP might be somewhere in the source file in PHP, don't think you need to run a special apache_mod for VB as encrypted PHP pages ?

Err, yeah... Been there, done that...

get the IP from your net trace, and block it. Quite easy.
and just how do you identify which trace element services this request???

You ever attempted to reverse-engineer someone else's code, whether in source or de-compiled??? It can be done, but it's not for the faint of heart...

That's what I was thinking... Boils down to how much your time is worth trying to crack the code, then support it downstream when you don't get updates...
