    It's the Modem Stupid

I use TOT broadband at the house and for months I've been plagued by the internet dropping out for hours, usually mid morning to late afternoon and very slow download and upload rates. So slow that I've been on ratio watch on thebox.bz.

It got so bad this week that I actually rang TOT to complain and kept ringing for 3 days until they sent two technicians round. They came armed with their own modem a voltmeter and a toothbrush. The tootbrush was used to clean out the phone terminal on the outside wall. They plugged their modem in and borowed my laptop.

    The verdict. "Your modem broken".

So now I have a new TP-Link combined ADSL modem and wireless. The line isn't dropping out and the download rates have doubled. But the kicker is upload rates seem to have gone up by 10 times.

I had a moden burn out as a result of a thunder storm. It took me three days to convince my provider of the fact, before they sent round 2 technicians to check my diagnosis. It turned out I was right & I was sent to the nearest providers branch for a replacement.

^What was involved with the switch? Just a straight change or did you need to get all technical and reconfigure stuff?

^ Modem comes with a setup disc which takes care of "most" everything

The free modems supplied by providers are usually crap. I've had the same issues last year with a BILLION modem. Changed for a BELKIN wireless modem/router and never experienced any drop anymore. Running 24/7.

With a regular modem (not a router), the only information you need to get going are your provider details, user name & password. I don't bother with setup discs, just wire it up, open a browser & go to the IP 192.188.1.1 (default for 99.99% of modems & routers). You'll need to know the pwd. for the device which will have been supplied by the provider e.g. admin or TOT or TTT etc.

I'm using the free modem supplied by TOT & it's fine, getting porn to stream can be a bit difficult sometimes de to the slow connection but TIT.
